The seed of reality that generated all the layers / veils / covers of the hybrid-medium Doina had sprung from a sad story, with a controversial and mysterious halo, thoroughly and successfully vulgarized by the local mass media, too late for the chronology of facts (revisited by journalists only after the fall of the communist regime in Romania), and in an increasingly soap-operized, mass-domineering manner.
We are talking about the half-surrealistic story of a Romanian born female artist (1950-possibly dead in 1997), Doina B., who appeared in the Romanian media in the highlights of her controversial life, as a victim, not in the role of an artist. Our character automatically stepped into an interpretation stereotypy, and, from a young, active paintress in the 1970s Italy, she became, apparently, a collateral victim of the evil lottery from the repressive system of North Korea.
This exhibition is a module / pendulum ‘measuring’ the idea of fiction, by excluding any biographical or disclosing approaches in the character’s identity, traits that would automatically lead to an unwanted showing effect. Doina’s identity scatters and becomes a pure, untranslatable, polysemous notion, creating sensations, sounds, images, signs and clues, in the total darkness of multiplication, until disappearance, of the veracity in the originating subject.
The fictitious/fictional dimension that we are pursuing (being, ironically, impossible to entirely detach from reality, given the fact that we are talking about the same language, the same alphabet, and the same codes and signs) is, briefly, an exercise of realistic rendition, but another kind of realism. It is a method that mirrors a new dimension of the already-known, a parallel one, translating our so familiar reality. Everything is so confusing, that becomes hallucinating clear. (Simona Vilau)
The exhibition is a part of Ephemeral Offerings. The loss of memory, archive and fiction in the context of Romanian contemporary art, a project financed by AFCN.
