Pidgin is the next generation of the legendary Gaim, one of the most used instant messaging programs, freeware and open source (Gaim was the default IM program installed in most Linux distributions based on GTK). So Gaim was rewritten, many bugs were corrected and a lot of features were added.
The main feature of Pidgin is the possibility of setting up and using multiple accounts, from different IM networks, all of them in the same program and...at the SAME TIME! Stop opening MSN, Google Talk and Yahoo! Messenger to chat with all your friends! You can have all your contacts together in one window.
Pidgin is compatible with the major IM networks: MSN, Yahoo!, Google Talk, ICQ and more. There are more options and features available for some networks, like file transfers, notifications, away messages, and more. And also, Pidgin can include special and unique features by installing plugins from the Pidgin community.
The program is very lightweight, and the user interface has not changed from Gaim, it is just a little more "stylish", clean and simple. Conversations can be grouped into tabbed windows.
