What is systematic synthetic phonics?
Systematic synthetic phonics (SSP) is a method to teach systematically and cumulatively the complex English alphabetic code (that is, the relationship, or links, between the smallest sounds of speech and the letters or letter groups that are code for the sounds); teach as a reversible code: from print-to-sound for decoding (reading) and sound-to-print for encoding (spelling). Debbie also provides guidance in teaching phonics ‘systematically’ AND ‘incidentally’.
Who is this phonics training for?
This course is designed for teachers, teaching assistants, tutors, home educators and schools looking for clear, practical guidance on teaching phonics and supporting pupils who need additional intervention.
Is this course suitable for beginners?
Yes. The training is structured to support both beginners and those with experience of phonics provision. The course provides step-by-step guidance and practical suggestions and resources.
How long does the course take?
The course is self-paced and can be completed in sections, allowing participants to work through the material at a convenient pace. The course includes over 20 hours of video lessons, with additional time for quizzes and optional reading. Most learners complete the course within 2–3 weeks, although it can be completed more quickly or over a longer period depending on individual study time.
How long do I have access to the course?
We set no rigid timescale for you to complete the course though we will periodically clean our database and delete those accounts which have been inactive for 12 months or longer. We will, however, give due notice and are more than happy to extend the 12 month period should circumstances mean you have been unable to access the course in the preceding 12 months.
Does the course support phonics intervention?
Yes. The training includes guidance on supporting learners who are struggling with reading, spelling and handwriting and require additional phonics intervention.
Do I get a CPD certificate?
Yes. Our course is fully accredited by The CPD Standards Office.
How do I get my certificate?
The course is divided into Modules each containing a number of Lessons and Quizzes. In order to progress through the course from Lesson to Lesson, the preceding Quiz must have been taken and passed. The pass mark for all quizzes is 80% – but don’t panic, any quiz may be re-taken at any time to reach the 80% which will then allow you to proceed to the next Module/Lesson.
At the end of Module 12/Lesson 3 is a Quiz. Completion of this Quiz (one question) will result in the certificate being awarded and you will see a link (blue button) ‘Print Your Certificate’. Click that button and you will see your certificate on screen ready to be downloaded as a PDF.
Modules 13 and 14 are optional relating specifically to the Phonics International and Floppy’s Phonics programmes and are not required to be completed in order to be awarded your certificate.
Important: Download the certificate first and then print. Printing direct from your browser produces inconsistent results!
