Career Achievement Alumni Award Recipients

The Alumni award is given each year to someone who exemplifies professionalism and longevity in the field of Hockey. They adhere to our code of ethics and it can be either an Athletic Therapist/Trainer or Equipment Manager. They also need to be a member in good standing with PHATS/SPHEM and have not worked at any NHL levels as a full time employee.

Tom Magee
Michigan State

Veteran equipment manager Tom Magee is the Athletic Equipment Coordinator for Michigan State hockey program.

Magee serves as assistant to Dave Pruder, director of MSU athletic equipment, as well as performing duties with the Spartan hockey program.  He has been a part of two National Championship runs (1986, 2007) with MSU.

Magee’s role as equipment manager consists of ordering, preparing, maintaining and repairing hockey equipment for the team.

He worked at U.S. Olympic Festivals in North Carolina in 1987 and in San Antonio in 1993 and has twice assisted Team USA in the North America College Hockey Championship.  

Magee began his work with MSU athletic equipment in 1975 as a student equipment manager for numerous Spartan athletic programs before assuming his current position in October 1981.

A graduate of Okemos High School, Magee has two children: his daughter, Heather, is a MSU graduate, while son, Tim, was a student manager for the hockey team and graduated from MSU in 2014.  He and his wife, Paula, reside in Bath with her son, Caden and have four grandchildren.

Dan began his OHL career in 1992 with the Sudbury Wolves, and has been with the Rangers since 1995.

Dan has proudly represented the Rangers many times with Hockey Canada, including being part of the training staff for the IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship squad that won gold in Geneva in 1997. He was also part of the training staff in back-to-back silver medal wins with Canada’s national junior teams in 2010 and 2011.
In the 2015-16 season, Dan was honoured by the Rangers for his service of more than 1,400 regular season games with the team, and more than 1,800 total regular season, playoff and Memorial Cup games in his OHL career.

Brad Thompson
Grand Rapids Griffins

A mainstay in Grand Rapids’ locker room since the 1997-98 campaign, Brad Thompsonbegins his 25th season as the Griffins’ equipment manager. He spent four seasons as the team’s equipment assistant before earning his promotion in 2001 and has worked more than 2,000 games with the Griffins.

On Nov. 24, 2024, Thompson worked his 2,000th game with the organization, a 5-2 victory over the Iowa Wild.

Thompson, who served as an equipment manager for the 2004, 2015 and 2018 AHL All-Star Classics, is responsible for purchasing and maintaining all hockey equipment for the Griffins. 

In 2022, Thompson was selected as the PHATS-SPHEM Career Achievement Award recipient for his dedication and excellent knowledge of his trade. Thompson became the first-ever equipment manager to receive this award. In recent years, Thompson has had the honor of equipping three championship teams, most notably the Griffins’ Calder Cup squads in both 2013 and 2017. He also worked with the Detroit Red Wings’ staff during that team’s run to the 2008 Stanley Cup, and he assisted the Red Wings during their return to the finals in 2009 as well as their three subsequent playoff runs (2010-12). 

A Wyoming, Michigan native, who can be found playing at rinks and softball diamonds throughout the area, he attended Wyoming Park High School and Grand Rapids Community College.
Thompson, the Griffins’ 2007 Employee of the Year, resides in Grand Rapids.
