Have you ever heard retirees say, “How did I ever find time to work?” This is the place where I find myself these days as I explore the world of writing. My days are busy between reading, writing, volunteering, and exercise. While I loved my career as an elementary teacher, I’m also enjoying this phase of life.
I wrote a memoir about my career, entitled They Call Me Mom: Making a Difference as an Elementary Teacher https://www.amazon.com/They-Call-Mom-Difference-Elementary-ebook/dp/B07YBL8DPY. It’s not only my story as someone who fell into education by accident, but it also offers insights and advice for future educators and parents.
I recently contributed to an anthology called This is How We Eat. (Kindle) https://us.amazon.com/THIS-HOW-WE-EAT-CONNECTION-ebook/dp/B0GNZNRJ9Y/(Paperback) https://us.amazon.com/This-How-We-Eat-Connection/dp/B0GR19DTXV/
As a veteran teacher, I’ve always liked anything associated with promoting literacy. It seemed like a natural fit for me to join the committee for the Humboldt County Children’s Author Festival. I’m excited to be a part of this group, which brings twenty-five children’s authors to our area biennially. The highlight of this festival for me is watching the authors talk to children about their books and the writing process. Here is the link to the website: https://www.authorfest.org/
Everything I’ve been doing in the past several years has been to work passionately toward my goal of writing novels for children. I’m at a point in my life where I pursue my aspirations with purpose and without fear. I’m a member of SCBWI (Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators), meet weekly with my writing critique group, and network with other bloggers. Though my end goal is to create books for the middle grades, I like to dabble in humor and blogging about whatever is on my mind.
