I really wanted to widen my understanding of Law and the industry to give me a better idea of what I wanted in a future career. Joining sessions online has been quick and easy so I can easily work it into my day. Having them be recorded means I can rewatch the sessions multiple times in the future or catch up on something I missed so that I have all the information I need.
The programme was so inspiring. If you're not sure, just take the chance, it could potentially be one of the best things you've ever done, as it was for me. You have nothing to lose by applying!

There’s a surprising range of careers in banking and finance to choose from, depending on what interests you. Many of them will entail negotiation, project management, financial advising, client management, and accounting. From professional skill workshops on negotiating and trading; to undergraduate taster lectures in economics; to hands-on work experience at banks and investment firms, you will explore whether banking and finance is the right path for you.
Eligibility criteria
You may apply to a Pathways programme if you:
Attend, and have always attended, a state-funded, non-fee paying school/college
Are studying in Year 12 in England or Wales, Year 13 in Northern Ireland, or S5 in Scotland (or equivalent)
Desirable results include:
Have achieved at least five GCSEs at grades 9 – 6 (or A*- B) or five A or B grades at National 5, including English and Maths. Universities may also consider your overall level of GCSE (or equivalent) attainment as part of the selection process. Individual institutions may have subject specific requirements which will be stated on the programme application form where applicable.
In addition, we are looking for students who:
Would be in the first generation of your family to attend university
Have been eligible for Free School Meals whilst at secondary school
Attend a school or college with below average attainment or a low rate of progression to the top third of higher education institutions
Live in a neighbourhood with a low rate of progression to higher education and/or a high level of socio-economic deprivation
Have been looked after or in care
The more criteria you meet, the more likely you are to secure a place. Not meeting all of these will not disqualify you.
How to apply
Step 1

Since we offer both in person and online pathways programmes, bear in mind that there is one piece of eligibility criteria which differs – location.
If you are on an in person programme, you must live within a 90 minute commuting distance of the university you are applying to.
Our online programmes are open to anyone across the country.
Step 2
Applications open
Applications open in early September.
It’s a very simple application form.
- Mostly yes/no questions
- A brief personal statement (of no more than 300 words) explaining your suitability for the programme and why you would like to participate
Step 3
Applications close (variable)
Dependent on each programme and university.
Usually between the end of September and early December
Step 4
Decisions announced
Dependent on each programme and university.
Usually early October to early December.
Step 5
Launch of Pathways programme and invitation to Sutton Trust Online
Dependent on each programme and university.
Usually around November and December.
