Benefits of Having a Digital Driving License
- Convenience (No Need to Carry Physical Cards): You don’t have to worry about carrying your driving license card everywhere. Since the digital license is saved on your phone, you can access it anytime. This also reduces the risk of losing or damaging your original card.
- Legally Valid Document: The digital driving license available through DigiLocker or mParivahan is officially accepted across the country. If traffic police ask for your license during a check, you can simply show the digital copy on your smartphone.
- Instant Updates: Whenever there is a change in your driving license, such as renewal or correction, the update appears quickly in the digital version. This ensures that the information you show is always current.
- Better Security: Digital documents are safer because they are harder to fake or alter. This helps prevent fraud and makes the system more reliable.
- Less Paperwork and Eco-Friendly: Using digital documents means less printing and fewer paper records. This helps promote a paperless system and supports environmental protection.
- Quick Verification for Officials: Traffic officers can easily check the authenticity of your license by scanning a QR code or verifying it through the official database. This makes the verification process faster and more efficient.
PUC Certificate: Check Validity on Parivahan Sewa
PUC (Pollution Under Control) certificate is mandatory for every vehicle on Indian roads. It certifies your vehicle’s exhaust emissions stay within legally permitted limits.
| Vehicle Type | Renewal Frequency | Fine if Expired | Cost to Renew |
|---|---|---|---|
| Petrol / CNG vehicles | Every 6 months | Up to ₹10,000 | ₹60–₹100 |
| Diesel vehicles | Every 3 months | Up to ₹10,000 | ₹100–₹150 |
How to Check PUC Validity Online (3 Steps)

- Under “Online Services” on the main menu.

Yes – completely. Under IT Act, 2000 and the Motor Vehicles Act, digital copies of DL and RC stored in mParivahan or DigiLocker are legally equivalent to physical documents. Traffic police across India must accept them. If an officer refuses, you have the legal right to contest it. You do not need to carry a physical card.
How to Apply for a Driving License
In India, getting a driving license happens in two stages. First, you need to apply for a Learner’s License (LL). This allows you to start learning how to drive legally. After you gain enough practice and confidence on the road, you can apply for a Permanent Driving License (DL).
Today, the process has become much easier because many steps can be completed online through the Parivahan Sewa portal. This saves time and reduces the need to visit government offices.
Below is a simple guide that explains the process step by step.

When Should You Renew Your Driving License?
The validity of a permanent driving license depends on the age of the person when the license was issued.
For Private Vehicles (Cars, Bikes, etc.)
If a license is issued before the age of 30, it usually remains valid for 20 years or until the person turns 40, whichever comes first. If the license is issued between the ages of 30 and 50, it normally stays valid for 10 years. For those who receive their license after the age of 50, the validity is usually about 5 years.

Parivahan Sewa 2026: All New Rules and Policy Changes
🆕 Parivahan Sewa 2026 new rules, policy updates, and official portal links | MoRTH, Government of India
Faceless Services – 20+ Transactions with Zero RTO Visit 2026
The biggest change in 2025 is the expansion of Faceless Services. These are DL-related transactions you now complete entirely online — Aadhaar-based authentication replaces the counter visit. To access them, link your mobile number to your Aadhaar via the Parivahan portal and ensure your Aadhaar details match your DL records. Services now fully faceless include DL renewal, address change, add vehicle class, and more.
Vehicle Scrappage Policy – Strict Enforcement 2026
Automated Testing Stations (ATS) now handle all vehicle fitness testing – manual checks are phased out. Commercial vehicles older than 10 years and private vehicles older than 15 years must pass ATS.
Mandatory ABS for All Two-Wheelers 2026
From 2026, ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) is legally mandatory for all two-wheelers — including 100cc and 110cc bikes. This applies to new purchases. Every new motorcycle and scooter sold in India must have ABS fitted.
DL Test Waiver at Accredited Training Centres New
Train at a government-recognized Accredited Driving Training Centre (ADTC) and skip the RTO driving test entirely. The ADTC issues a certified training completion certificate, and your DL processes directly without the standard skill test.

For Second-Hand Vehicle Buyers – The Smart Buyer’s Guide 🔍
Always run a VAHAN check before you buy. Here is exactly what the check reveals and what each red flag means:
| What to Check | Red Flag Meaning | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Vehicle blacklisted | Stolen / court-seized vehicle | Do not buy under any circumstances |
| Insurance lapsed | Seller hiding vehicle history | Ask for full insurance records |
| Outstanding e-Challans | You inherit all fines after transfer | Demand seller clears all challans first |
| Active hypothecation (loan) | Bank still has a claim on the vehicle | Demand Form 35 + bank NOC before buying |
| RC expired | Vehicle not legally maintained | Demand renewal before completing sale |
| Fitness lapsed (commercial) | Vehicle failed safety standards | Get a fresh fitness certificate done |

The Road Ahead for Parivahan Sewa
MoRTH’s goal is a fully paperless RTO by 2027. The roadmap includes complete national rollout of Faceless Services for all 1,300+ RTOs, AI-powered document verification cutting processing time under 24 hours, real-time vehicle tracking for commercial fleet compliance, and full EV registry under Vahan Green Sewa.
India has 41 crore registered vehicles and counting. Parivahan Sewa is the infrastructure that makes managing all of them possible, transparently, efficiently, and without corruption.
