Please come ready to dance, in comfortable clothing, and jazz, tennis, or character shoes. You will be taught a short jazz-style combination and then you will be asked to perform the combo in small groups.

A NOTE from Casting:

Most characters we encounter currently are on the binary and are written with he/him or she/her pronouns. However limiting the descriptions are, our casting seeks to be inclusive as possible and we invite gender non-conforming, genderqueer, transgender, and non-binary actors to submit for the roles they most identify with.

We will also list race/ethnicity when specific to the character but are otherwise seeking all races and ethnicities.

Character Descriptions

ABOUT THIS PRODUCTION: Joe goes retro! This coming-of-age story is steeped in 80s nostalgia, harkening back to the days of analog media, MTV, and racing home when the streetlights came on. Staying true to Joseph’s eclectic blend of musical styles and shifting tones, our story is anchored by the indescribable feeling of wandering your local video rental store in search of the perfect tape. At times satire, at times parody, but mostly a love letter to the media we grew up with, and the stories that continue to shape us.

NARRATOR
Female, Black, 20s – 50s
Our guide through Joseph’s story who exists outside of time and space. She floats effortlessly between protagonist and antagonist with Joseph but she adores the kids she’s sharing his story with. She’s equally adept at singing a lullaby and an anthem. Largely inspired by Whitney Houston. Other musical guides include Janet Jackson and Regina Belle.

JOSEPH
Male, Late Teens – 20s
Jacob’s second youngest son. He is his father’s favorite and he knows it. He’s handsome, smart and a dreamer but when it comes to reading the room, he’s illiterate. You can’t help but love him! The kids are the only ones privy to his insecurity until the end of the show when he’s reunited with his brothers and must offer and seek forgiveness. Largely inspired by Ferris Bueller with touches of Duckie Dale (Pretty in Pink), Billy Peltzer (The Gremlins) & Brand Walsh (The Goonies).

JACOB / POTIPHAR
Male, 40s – 60s
JACOB- Joseph’s Father. A man has never been more at home in a cardigan. He’s got that Mr. Rogers warmth with some of the hardheadedness of Steven Keaton (Family Ties).
POTIPHAR- Filthy rich and it shows. The only thing he loves more than his mansion and his money is his trophy wife.

PHARAOH
Any Gender, 20s – 40s
Pharaoh is the most powerful person in Egypt due to sheer charisma. They are a major celebrity and most in their element in front of their adoring fans. They quickly recognize Joseph’s confidence and take him under their wing. They have a “can’t look away” quality about them. Largely inspired by Prince with an alluring blend of Tim Curry’s Frank-N-Furter and Freddie Mercury. Guitar a plus but not required.

JOSEPH’S BROTHERS
Male, 20s – 40s
*Seeking all genders to play the Brothers*
A heavily featured ensemble of 11 brothers who can’t live with each other and can’t live without each other. They cast a wide net of archetypes from high school jock to nerd to young entrepreneur. As a unit they feel like The Lost Boys or The Outsiders and two of them are probably “twins” ala Corey Haim and Corey Feldman. They are strong singers and dancers who float seamlessly between the different musical styles in the show. They may also play other ensemble roles throughout the show and features like BAKER & BUTLER.

Reuben- One of the brothers who writes a country ballad about Joseph’s “passing”. Rather than the twangy “western” parody this number can often fall into, we’re seeking a performer who is genuinely proficient in the singing country-style music. Cool and confident and hopefully proficient in guitar. Musical inspiration includes Randy Travis, George Strait and Garth Brooks.

Simeon- One of the brothers who perform a French ballad in a film-noir style (which saw a resurgence in the 1980s), perhaps joined by another brother. He is the reason smoking looked cool. He leans into old Hollywood tropes and thinks the world is a black and white movie. Sometimes to a fault.

Judah- A brother who has seen the Harry Belafonte episode of The Muppet Show one too many times. There is very little parody in their performance of this song, but a great deal of homage. He is a black man who sings a calypso-style number.

WIVES
Female, 20s – 40s
An ensemble who play the wives/girlfriends of the brothers and Jacob as well as a number of other roles throughout the show including Pharaoh’s fans & back-up dancers, Narrator’s background singers, Ishmaelites, and POTIPHAR’S WIFE. They all dance and sing multiple styles throughout.

KIDS CHORUS
Any Gender, Ages 10-13
Young performers who range from budding cinephiles to Teen Magazine obsessives. They make up one or two cliques of kids who are invited into the story by our mystical narrator and discover the power of music, representation, embracing differences and welcoming in “the other”. Our production will feature this group as a participating ensemble rather than vocal viewership, requiring all of them to be strong singers and movers. Two of the kids will be prominently featured as parallels to Joseph and the Narrator.
