The aim of the COST Action “Circular City Re.Solution” is to build an interdisciplinary platform for connecting city planners, architects, system designers, circular economists, engineers and researchers from social and natural sciences that develop systems allowing cities to cope with the challenges described above. In this COST Action, the definition for a common language and understanding across disciplines are seen as crucial success factor, while CE concepts are seen as key approach and NBS or GI solutions are seen as core elements of the toolbox. : By recovering nitrogen and phosphorus from waste streams, the NENUPHAR project aims to provide competitively priced fertilisers and other products for the food value chain while promoting cleaner soil, air, and water systems. Achieving this goal requires significant political, regulatory, and governance efforts to involve all key stakeholders. The project targets three waste streams: manure, sewage sludge, and dairy wastewaters. It plans to introduce four main innovations: a methodology for estimating N/P emissions from fertiliser application on soil, new governance models based on network governance, innovative economic and financial incentives for both public and private entities and enabling technologies for nutrient recovery from waste.

SIAAP- the greater Paris Sanitation Authority- was established in 1970. It transports and treats wastewater for nine million people in and around Paris, along with stormwater and industrial water, contributing to a thriving natural environment in the Seine and Marne rivers. SIAAP covers four French departments : Paris, Hauts-de-Seine, Seine-Saint-Denis, and Val-de-Marne, along with 180 municipalities in the Val d’Oise, Essonne, Yvelines and Seine-et-Marne departments, which have signed an agreement with the SIAAP. The SIAAP board comprises 33 local councilors from the four founding departments. SIAAP has an annual budget of 1,3 billion euros to provide public services in and around Paris, the European city with the highest population density. SIAAP and its 1,800 employees manage and operate 440 km of pipes, six treatment plants and 12 stormwater retention basins.

PIREN-Seine is a research group whose aim is to develop an overall vision of the operation of the system comprising the Seine hydrographic network, its watershed and the human society which depends on it. The ecological function of the river system as a whole and its modelling, from its bacteria through to its fish, are based on a detailed study of the ambient physical, chemical and biological processes. The models developed by PIREN-Seine simulate the ecological and biochemical variations within the hydro-system, from the streams until it reaches the estuary. Supported by UPMC and CNRS, it brings together teams from a number of universities, research centres, engineering schools and research bodies of the operators involved. Projects are executed with the majority of the public and private water management stakeholders in the Seine-Normandy basin.
