DR. JESSICA ESQUIVEL
Physicist, Science Communicator, Disruptor
As one of few AfroLatine women with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering and Applied Physics from St. Mary’s University — and the second to graduate with a PhD in Physics from Syracuse University — Dr. Esquivel brings a unique and personal perspective on the importance of equity, diversity, accessibility, and inclusion in STEAM. Driven by a belief in science for all and the power of intersectional perspectives, she has co-founded Oyanova as a pivotal step toward achieving systemic change.

Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor
Emily Esquivel is a seasoned therapist and founder of Oyanova Healing, a private counseling practice that helps empower individuals on their self-discovery journeys. Her practice centers those who have been historically and intentionally marginalized, understanding the very real cultural, systemic, and structural barriers they face in accessing care. While trained psychoanalytically, she takes a relational, integrative, and collaborative approach, encouraging therapists and clients to find what works best for them — prioritizing safety and the importance of embracing their full identities.

Oyanova, in collaboration with Black in Physics, Change – Now, and Oyanova Healing, is a collective force paving roads and driving change for Black and Brown communities.
Black In Physics works to inspire future Black Physicists across the world by curating, creating, and communicating engaging physics research and enhancing scientific communities.
Change — Now is a team working to create lasting institutional change via direct calls to action from and supporting Black scientists at Fermilab.
Oyanova is a catalyst for Black and Brown communities to thrive — we are built upon a community of transformation framework, dedicated to developing infrastructures that foster, celebrate, and amplify futures where generational wealth, financial stability, mental health, and overall well-being are accessible to all. Through a holistic approach encompassing mental health, education, economic empowerment, and cultural enrichment, we aim to create a thriving ecosystem where individuals and communities flourish.
Oyanova Healing is a private therapy practice that centers the holistic well-being of individuals from historically and intentionally marginalized communities. The aim at Oyanova Healing is to help reduce barriers to care, destigmatize harmful cultural and societal beliefs about mental health, and help individuals find more degrees of freedom in their lives and relationships.
