Every year The Orwell Society and NUJ offer awards to a total of £4,000 for young journalists.

Dystopian Fiction Prize

Every year The Orwell Society holds a competition for students to write a dystopian short story.  As well as a cash prize of £750, the winner receives a bust of Orwell to be retained for one year and has their winning story published in the Society journal.  The deadline for entries in the next competition will be announced here.

School and Teacher Award

The Orwell Society School and Teacher Awards support teachers undertaking projects on Orwell and his circle, often within an Orwell connected locality.
We are seeking to build on our successful awards to schools in Jura, Wigan and South Shields by making further awards.  Applications for the 2025 – 2026 annual award are now closed.
