Sylvan Way’s junction with the Portway
April to autumn 2026
Description of work and disruption
In April we started work on and around Sylvan Way’s junction with the Portway.
The first stage involved removing the pedestrian island.
There will be traffic management in place throughout the works, including temporary traffic lights.
From the evening of Sunday 7 June we will be changing access arrangements and closing Sylvan Way one-way between Shirehampton Road and the Portway.
This will mean vehicles will not be able to drive onto the Portway from Sylvan Way.
Access from the Portway onto Sylvan Way will remain open if travelling in the direction of the city centre (inbound only).
We expect this arrangement to last until early autumn.
You will need to follow signage and the diversion.
Work in this area also includes:
- Improving the pavement, kerb, drainage and bus stops
- replacing the traffic signals and street lighting
it will be followed by road resurfacing and painting the road markings towards the end of the wider A4 Portway scheme.
Thank you for your patience while we work to improve the Portway for everyone.
Access for pedestrians and cyclists
Access will remain in place but please follow any signage in the area.
