Partner Development

Exemplifying the brand, embodying the culture and ensuring the legacy of your firm

Overview

For new Partners to be well-equipped to face the challenges of a rapidly changing professional services environment, they must demonstrate the key skills, behaviours and mindset to guarantee the continued success of the firm and to secure its future.

Some professionals may have been promoted for technical expertise and excellence. Often, they have not had the opportunity to develop the key skills and behaviours required to be an effective leader, and to fully understand the impact of their individual contribution to the broader interests and future success of the firm.

The programme includes personal assessment and feedback, a series of training modules with follow-up coaching sessions to ensure that participants have the opportunity to develop and refine the core skills, behaviours and mindset essential for success.

Woven into the programme design is an understanding of the dynamics of a professional services partnership-based environment and the need to align the way that Partners represent the firm externally, embody the culture internally and create a legacy to ensure the future success of the firm. Each topic will be explored in the context of its interaction with the external environment (clients and experts) as well as the internal environment in respect of relationships with colleagues, team members and more senior colleagues.

The modules from the programme:

  • Exemplifying the brand
  • Embodying the culture
  • Ensuring the legacy

The Programme is appropriate for: New Partners, Managing Partner, Senior Manager, Partner, COO, CEO

Here’s what some of our partners have to say:

“I realised I should think of the partnership in multiple dimensions, some of them I had never explored before (i.e. legacy).”
“Very valuable at the right time”
“Inspiring and rewarding”
“Very useful to have the time to stop and think what type of Partner I want to be”
“Super useful”
“Excellent experience and excellent hosts”
“Great fun”
“Useful not only for my day-to-day but also for my strategic thoughts”

Common themes in the transition to Partner based on 3 years of research with Partners in a European Law Firm:

  • From safeguarding the firm’s brand → to establishing their own identity and projecting that in the market.
  • From balancing workload → to actively building and guiding teams, keeping them engaged and resilient in a demanding environment.
  • From building a baseline portfolio → to proving credibility and visibility, growing business in a competitive, price-sensitive market.

“Debbie, I have loved the programme. I have, over the past 30 years at the firm, participated in many programmes, and as I said in my feedback, and I meant it, yours was the best!”

    Hear from a Programme Leader

“’Leadership’ is such a vague and nebulous concept. In our development work, we prefer to focus on the specific behaviours driving success at Senior levels in Professional Services.

We view the critical roles at a ‘Partner’ level as: representing the brand, being a custodian of the culture, and building a legacy, both for the Firm and as an individual. Our programmes address the skills and behaviours needed in each of those roles, aligned uniquely to the brand and culture of each Firm – raising self-awareness and providing a clear development path for each participant.”  –William Johnson, Managing Director

“William certainly gave the Partners a lot to think about during his presentations and challenged their thinking. The feedback was so positive.”
