Frequently Asked Questions

General

What is Open Film Zone (OFZ)?
OFZ is a global, online film festival and creative community open 24/7. It provides a space for filmmakers to upload their work, participate in monthly competitions, network with other creators, and showcase projects in development. Unlike other platforms, OFZ is democratic—winners rise by community votes, not algorithms.

Who can join OFZ?
Anyone, anywhere in the world. OFZ is open to beginners, independent filmmakers, students, and professionals alike. The only requirement is a passion for creating and sharing cinema.

How is OFZ different from YouTube or Vimeo?
YouTube is a massive platform driven by algorithms, where most films get lost. OFZ is curated around cinema as art—it offers themed monthly competitions, professional-style project showcases, and democratic voting where audiences decide what rises to the top.

Subscriptions & Accounts

Do I need to pay to join OFZ?
No. Open Film Zone is the only fully free film festival for 2025. 2026 begins a new yearly cycle with a 8,99€ monthly subscription for creators at some point.

Viewers can browse and vote for free (with a basic account).
Creators who want to upload films, enter competitions, or network need a monthly subscription.

How long does a subscription last?
One subscription lasts 30 days from the date you join. Subscriptions can be renewed automatically or manually.

What happens if I cancel my subscription?

  • Your uploaded videos and projects remain on OFZ (unless you delete them).
  • Your profile is hidden from the networking space.
  • You can still vote and comment as a free user.

Uploading Films

What can I upload?
OFZ supports short films, features, documentaries, music videos, experimental works, and more.

What happens when I upload a film?
You’ll be asked to choose:

  1. Form (short, feature, doc, music video, etc.)
  2. Zone (5 zones max: like Action, Spirituality, Realism)
  3. 3 Monthly Theme Competitions (e.g., The Human Condition, Nightmares & Monsters) starting in 2026
  4. DIY Tag (check if your work is independently made with minimal resources)

Can I enter my video into more than one competition?
Yes. Each video can compete in three monthly theme competitions. This ensures fairness and prevents repetition.

Can I submit the same video to a future competition?
Yes, if it has not already competed in 3 months. Every film gets three chances to shine in its chosen monthly themes.

Competitions & Voting

How do the monthly competitions work?

  • Each month has a unique theme (e.g., The Human Condition, Nightmares & Monsters).
  • Creators upload their films and enter them into three monthly competitions.
  • Viewers and subscribers vote democratically in different award categories.
  • Winners receive certificates and front-page exposure.

What are the categories?
Categories vary by month. For example, The Human Condition might include Best Character Study, Best Portrayal of Mental Health, Best Story of Forgiveness, etc.

How do I vote?
Create a free OFZ account, browse the Vote page, and cast votes in each category. You can vote once per category per competition.

Can I change my vote?
Currently, no. Once cast, your vote is final.

How are winners decided?
Winners are chosen purely by community votes. There are no algorithms, juries, or hidden processes.

Pitch Zone

What is the Pitch Zone?
The Pitch Zone is a special archive where filmmakers can share projects in development—ideas, scripts, or works-in-progress. It provides timestamp proof of originality and opens space for collaboration.

Do I need to tag my project with a Zone in the Pitch Zone?
No. Unlike finished films, Pitch Zone is zone-free by design. Ideas here are free to evolve without being forced into categories too early.

What can I include in my pitch?

  • Title & logline
  • Synopsis / vision statement
  • Pitch deck or lookbook
  • Needs (roles, collaborators, funding)
  • Mood images or references

Can people steal my ideas?
Every project in the Pitch Zone is timestamped on upload, serving as proof of originality. This offers protection for creators by establishing a verifiable record of when their idea was shared.

Voting Accounts

Do I get notified when I vote?
You’ll see an on-site confirmation immediately after voting. Weekly recap emails (optional) can remind you of your activity.

Can I see my voting history?
Yes, in your profile you’ll find a Voting History tab showing which films you’ve supported, plus badges and stats.

Is my voting history public?
By default, no. You can choose in Settings whether to make your voting history visible to others (coming soon).

Recognition & Prizes

What do winners get?

  • Official OFZ Winner Certificate
  • Featured placement on the OFZ front page
  • Networking visibility (more exposure to other creators and potential collaborators)

Is there a cash prize?
Not yet. Future plans include cash prizes and revenue-sharing opportunities once the platform grows and advertising revenue is introduced.

Is the real prize just visibility?
Yes. OFZ is built on the belief that art itself is the prize—having your work seen, shared, and recognized globally is the first step toward future opportunities.

Philosophy

Why does OFZ exist?
Because cinema belongs to everyone—not just studios, elites, or those with millions in funding. OFZ is for the grassroots creators whose voices deserve to rise, where algorithms don’t decide, but the people do.

What is “DIY” in OFZ?
DIY means “do-it-yourself”. DIY films are independent works created with minimal resources. They represent the raw, authentic spirit of grassroots filmmaking. DIY is not a lesser category—it is celebrated as a core pillar of OFZ.

Is OFZ just another streaming site?
No. OFZ is an online festival and creative community, not a content farm. Every element—from themed competitions to project archives—is designed to elevate cinema as an art form.

Legal

Q: Do I own rights to the video I upload?

A: Legal Terms of Service (TOS) Section

Creator Rights and Content Ownership

Ownership
All content uploaded by users (“Creators”) to OFZ remains the sole intellectual property of the Creator. OFZ does not claim ownership over any videos, audio, scripts, images, or ideas submitted by Creators.

License to Host and Promote
By uploading content to OFZ, you grant OFZ a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to host, display, promote, and distribute your content solely in connection with the operation of the OFZ platform. This license:

  • Is revocable at any time by removing the content;
  • Does not transfer any ownership or exclusive rights;
  • Allows OFZ to feature your content in competitions, promotional materials, or curated collections.

Takedown and Infringement Policy
OFZ follows a DMCA-style takedown process. If you believe your copyright has been infringed, you may file a complaint through our reporting system. OFZ reserves the right to investigate claims and remove or restrict access to infringing content.

Proof of Authorship
Uploaded content is assigned a time-stamped record upon submission. This serves as preliminary proof of authorship should a dispute arise.

Optional Watermarking and Credits
Creators may enable a watermark featuring their creator handle or brand. OFZ also encourages embedding visible credits within videos or including authorship metadata for additional protection.

Prohibited Conduct
Users may not upload content that infringes on the intellectual property of others. Repeat violations may result in account termination and IP bans.

Q: Should I feel comfortable uploading on the site?

A: At OFZ, we take creator rights seriously. You deserve to feel confident sharing your original content. This guide will help you understand how to protect your work, and what to do if someone copies or misuses your ideas.

How to Protect Your Work

1. Register Your Work

Registering your script, pitch deck, or film gives you legal proof of authorship, which is crucial in a dispute.

2. Save All Drafts & Emails

Keep records of your creative process:

  • Draft files with timestamps
  • Emails where you pitch or share ideas
  • Videos and concept art stored on verifiable cloud platforms

3. Use Private Links Before Public Release

When sharing rough cuts or pitches, consider password-protected pages (e.g., Vimeo private links or watermarked PDFs).

What to Do If Your Work is Stolen or Copied

If someone posts your video or creates a suspiciously similar film without your permission:

Register a Formal Complaint

If the issue goes beyond our platform, we recommend contacting a qualified entertainment lawyer. They can help you:

  • Send a cease & desist letter
  • File a copyright infringement lawsuit
  • Negotiate a settlement or credit agreement

Legal Help & Agencies

  • Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts (NY): vlany.org
  • Entertainment Law Firms: Search via your local Bar Association or referrals

We’re here to support you. If you have questions about protecting your rights, email us at info@openfilmzone.com

Q: What if someone steals or copies my idea?

A: If a filmmaker believes their film idea, script, or original concept has been stolen, they can and should contact a qualified entertainment attorney or legal agency that specializes in intellectual property (IP), copyright law, or entertainment disputes

Here’s a breakdown of the best paths forward:

When to Contact a Copyright or Entertainment Lawyer

You should reach out to a lawyer immediately if:

  • A studio or filmmaker releases a work that is substantially similar to yours
  • You have proof of prior creation (e.g., a registered script, pitch deck, email trail)
  • You pitched your idea and later saw it produced without credit or consent
  • You want to send a legal cease and desist or file a lawsuit

Recommended Legal Avenues & Resources

1. Entertainment Lawyers / IP Attorneys

These lawyers specialize in idea theft, script disputes, option agreements, and IP defense

How to find one:

  • Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts (VLA):
  • Bar Association referrals: Your local or state Bar Association can refer you to licensed entertainment/IP lawyers.

2. Entertainment Law Firms (U.S. Examples)

  • Donaldson + Callif LLP (Los Angeles) – Known for indie film and documentary representation
  • Loeb & Loeb LLP – Large firm with media and entertainment practice
  • Frankfurt Kurnit Klein & Selz PC – NYC-based, high-profile entertainment legal group
  • Greenberg Glusker – Represent many creatives and production companies

3. Script & Idea Protection Services (Preventive)

  • Writers Guild of America (WGA) Registration
  • Allows you to register your script or treatment even if you’re not a member
  • Serves as legal evidence of authorship
  • U.S. Copyright Office
  • Register your screenplay, treatments, or pitch decks

Caution: What Can Be Protected?

It’s difficult—but not impossible—to protect just an “idea.” In most legal cases:

  • General ideas or themes aren’t protected (e.g., “a dystopian sci-fi romance”)
  • Specific expression of the idea is—such as your script, dialogue, or sequence of events
  • Having proof you created it first is crucial (timestamped documents, emails, registry)

If you believe your original idea has been misused by another party on or off OFZ, we strongly encourage you to contact a qualified entertainment or copyright attorney. We also recommend registering your creative works with the WGA or U.S. Copyright Office for legal protection.

Q: Who should I contact in case of intellectual property theft?

A: There are several official organizations, platforms, and services that creators can use to report or register copyright infringement. Here’s a breakdown:

1. U.S. Copyright Office (USCO)

  • You can formally register your copyright here (recommended if you want to take legal action).
  • Offers tools and information for resolving disputes.

Use it when:
You want to register a copyright, or are pursuing a legal case in the U.S.

2. DMCA.com

  • Offers automated takedown services for a fee.
  • Helps file DMCA complaints to hosting companies, ISPs, and platforms.

Use it when:
You want a third-party to help file takedown notices across multiple sites.

3. YouTube Content ID / Copyright Webform

  • Allows anyone to submit copyright complaints
  • Creators with registered works can also use Content ID to auto-flag reuploads.

Use it when:
Someone reposted your work on YouTube or other Google properties

4. Facebook/Instagram Rights Manager

  • Offers rights-holders a way to track and block stolen content on Meta platforms.

Use it when:
Your work appears on Facebook or Instagram without permission.

5. Pixsy (for photographers/visual creators)

  • Scans the internet for stolen images and offers legal enforcement services.

Use it when:
You are a visual artist or filmmaker and want help tracking unauthorized use.

BONUS: Creative Commons Licensing (Prevention)

Not for reporting, but you can label your work with specific usage permissions

Q: Will OFZ offer public support for my idea in case of plagiarism?

A: If an uploaded video on OFZ becomes involved in a credible legal dispute involving substantial proof of copyright infringement, OFZ considers highlighting the case publicly on our platform. This visibility is intended to raise awareness, support the creator, and foster greater accountability within the creative industry.

While we hope such situations remain rare, we believe that transparency and public dialogue can contribute to broader reforms that better protect artists’ rights. Our goal is not just to host content, but to stand with creators when their work is challenged.
