Guinevere [Merlin]
01 January 2020 @ 02:00 pm
This is a general contact post for Gwen and the place to start if you're interested in playing with her.

I also welcome constructive criticism and advice, as well as canon corrections whenever necessary. No one is infallible, and, although this is my interpretation of the character, I welcome input from other fans and writers. It’s always good to know what works and what doesn’t.

Comments are screened, just in case, but you're very welcome to contact me on AIM or by email if you prefer. The details are all in my journal profile.

I can also be reached fairly easily via my personal journal, atraphoenix, but please keep in mind that I live in the UK and operate on GMT.

[The work of a maid - particularly the maid serving the Lady Morgana - is never done. If you're looking for Gwen, you will almost certainly find her working in the castle.]

Gwen arrived in the nexus with a cloak pulled up to conceal her face, though she wasn't certain who she was hiding from. It had been a long time since she'd seen anyone but Morgana in this strange meeting place between worlds. It had been even longer since since she'd seen another familiar face - someone like Arthur or Merlin - here. She was cautious out of habit and because she knew, on a level she tried not to acknowledge, that what she was doing was wrong. Terribly wrong.

She loved Arthur. She knew that and, despite the impossibilities of their relationship, she didn't doubt it. But then she'd find herself thinking of Morgana - the Morgana that she'd lost and the Morgana that she had found by some strange twist of fate - and she knew that her heart didn't belong to him alone.

She didn't know what to do, but she knew that she couldn't bear the thought of losing Morgana again. She'd let her friend and mistress down in so many ways - neglecting her for Arthur and missing the warning the signs that she could have used to stop her descent into darkness - and she was determined to make sure that the mistakes weren't repeated again.

In a secluded corner of the nexus, furnished with a simple table and a cushioned bench, Gwen removed her cloak and a bottle of red wine. It wasn't a particularly fine drink - like the cups that she set out next, it had come from her own house rather than the castle kitchens - but it hardly mattered. During the moments that they stole together, it was the company that counted.

My own world may have deviated from what you call 'canon' a long time ago, but you can't expect me to be unaffected by what I've heard. Lancelot ... and what Morgana has become ... it's difficult to imagine it.

Lancelot is one of the best and most noble men that I've ever known. I am not surprised that he sacrificed himself for the sake of his friends.

[Though that did not make what had happened in that world any easier to accept. It had been a long time since Lancelot had left Camelot behind him, but Gwen hoped to see him again one day. She could not and would not imagine a world without him in it.]

And Morgana ... [Gwen swallowed.] Morgana has been forced to live her whole life in fear of what she can do. I think that would be enough to push anyone over the edge.

I know I can't change what has already happened, but I can make sure that the future unfolds differently in our world. I won't let her lose herself. Her magic doesn't make her evil. I know she has a good heart. I know what is happening now is just an experiment.

It will be over soon and I will stand by her. I swear it.

Gwen and her father had always been close. Before her mother had died, she had spent as much time as her chores allowed at the forge, learning the tricks of the trade that made his work so sought after. With the heat of the fire on her cheeks and particles of drifting ash clinging to her clothes and hair, she watched Tom transform rough raw materials into horse shoes and tools and armour and all manner of useful things. Sometimes, when her mother wasn’t looking, she made herself useful by collecting water or passing tools or – best of all – providing an extra pair of hands. He was the best blacksmith in the city, everyone said so, and her heart would swell with pride when he worked.

Things changed after her mother’s death. The family had never been rich and, without her meagre wages, they found it even more difficult to make ends meet. Claire had been well liked and many people in Camelot felt her absence keenly, but grief didn’t put food on the table or supply the materials that her father needed. Gwen had no choice but to follow in her mother’s footsteps and take up a position in a noble household. She worked tirelessly in the castle during the day and at night she worked tirelessly to make sure that their house remained a home. She and Tom had even less time to spend together, but they grew closer still. Particularly after Elyan left.

She would never forget the first day that she returned home to a forge that was dark and silent.Collapse )
