The Ontario Medical Students Association’s Advocacy and Education Portfolios solicit Position and Perspective Papers from medical students across the province. Papers serve as an opportunity for medical students to share with a wider audience their perspectives about medical education and healthcare issues that they are passionate about. They also serve a key role in shaping OMSA’s advocacy and educational initiatives.
Position Papers define OMSA’s official stances on important issues, and serve as guiding principles in discussions both internally and with external stakeholders. They provide justification for a stance taken by the organization, and are formally endorsed by OMSA Council. Once endorsed, these Papers guide OMSA Council members and representatives both in internal committee discussions and in meetings with external organizations.
Perspective Papers represent student perspectives on medical education or healthcare issues that matter to them. They provide an opportunity for students to explore a wider breath of topics, to share their advocacy, voices, and opinions, serving as a platform to highlight medical students’ opinions from across the province. Perspective Papers are not officially endorsed or reviewed by OMSA Council, and thus do not represent the official stance or guide future advocacy efforts of OMSA.
Want to submit a paper? Any Ontario Medical Student is welcome to contribute new papers to OMSA, working alongside the Advocacy and/or the Education portfolio to develop new papers. For more information on creating and submitting new policy or position papers, please click here.
Officially founded in May 1974 during the Ontario Medical Association’s AGM, the Student Section of the OMA was started using the acronym “OMSA” (short for Ontario Medical Students Association) in 2004.
