valley of democracy no. 4

~

There goes Old Glory settin’ in the west

shootin’ rays thru a cloud, the rest of the best

flies have ceased buzzing, but anudder distant plane do moan

a bird warbles for a spell as I languish here in The Zone

~

The town tramp told me sleeping on the ground gives you power

earth power, he said, and he was serious as a fragrant flower

now, me, I haven’t slept on the ground for quite a while

maybe I should tonight but, no, sleeping in the truck is more my style

~

Actually sleeping on the ground would be okay if I had to

people generally don’t sleep there if they don’t have to

but Chuck, my friend the famous author, he’ll sleep on the ground for fun

and call it holy, just like the tramp did, it’s true, my unbelieving son

~

Well, yes, it can be a holy experience dealing with nature at night

sleeping on the ground, rollin’ around, in the camp-fire light

everybody should try it at least once, I do say

anyway, good night, time to light the candle, tomorrow’s another day
