When you finally reach Deep Desert for real

you just rock in the wind with nothin’ to feel

but whatever you are, with or without a guitar

well, by gum, go ahead, touch your lone star

~

Me, I’m sittin’ in a little enclave surrounded by books

the doors are shut, the vent’s open, whatever is ~ just cooks

the wind is cookin’ along ’til, I guess, it evaporates

I’m all alone in the desert while she anticipates

~

Hidin’ in burrows and unwilling to reveal herself

wonderin’ who I am, what books are on my shelf

let me tell you, Lady Desert, I got the best books around

for sale here, amidst no-where, on your trusty ground

~

Our Lady of Guadalupe is standing right in front of me

humble, tender, persistent, a portrait of love forever free

free of humankind’s urban mocking greedy ultra idiocy

when you live without The Word you’re worse than piracy

~

Piracy upon the seas looting everything that might sail by

lizards in canoes, burros on rafts with ears twitching high

go ahead, crap-fucks, voraciously pluck it all up

’til there’s nothin’ left but your own over-a-brim drip slop cup

Old Russ, one lean bean under a dirty baseball cap,

missing teeth, needs a shave, fine old chap

likes to read the good stuff & endlessly rap

hobbled up to ye olde mule lookin’ for a vein to tap

~

And found one, found two – cost him 10 bucks

a couple books that had nothin’ to do with raising ducks

they also had nothin’ to do with driving trucks

also, they were not about building aqueducts

~

They were about, uh, let’s see, tracking & trapping

yeeeeeeeap, that’s it, that’s what was happening

in ye olde mind of Russ, ye olde desert rat

so with 10 bucks (for supplies) I left town, how ’bout ‘dat

~

In the bush n’ the cacti, I kicked off my shoes

with a book in my lap, I started to snooze

n’ before I knew it I’d made me a lizard friend

the little runt amused me about 8 mile around the bend

~

This little critter’s whole body wiggled when he ran

from bush to bush and his slithering tail was oh so grand

then he come up next to me & look me in the eye

then he dart away & do it again on the sly

~

Then he’d disappear for a while, I’d read some

then off in the distance, well, here he come

skid to a halt next to me, dig around, n’ up n’ tilt his head

there he was, lookin’ me in the eye like a thoroughbred

~

Nothing more happened ‘cept once he bumped into my heel

finally it was time to go & I hopped behind the wheel

and off I went back to town to sell another book

I was broke n’ hungry but nobody would take a look

~

It was just about closing time n’ up come Russ

this was 3 days later, I was out there a while, I confuss

anyway, ye olde desert rat don’t just grab a book

he makes me dangle all my finest bait on my slickest hook

~

So, when he left I had 7 dollars in my pocket

I cleaned up n’ to the cafe took off like a rocket

now there’s a hamburger in my belly & I’m drinking a beer

& this rhyme is done – the world is full of cheer

The boy went thru all the books in thee olde book mule

he and his pal were way beyond goin’ to school

intrigued the most by the oldest books they could find

I pointed ’em all out like nuggets hiddin in a gold mine

~

He just had to have thee olde Saga Of Billy The Kid

wanted to read the true story of what that outlaw did

thee olde tome was held together by small pieces of tape

sittin’ on the shelf waitin’ to get plucked like a grape

~

But Dad got enthralled by a historical picture book

and would only buy that so that is all that they took

and away to Rocky Point they sped for the weekend

I said “adios” to Dad, his son, and his son’s friend

~

My God, how is an idiot like that bred by this world?

Bought a picture book but not a real book slightly curled

for his son who was willing to sit down and read

Jesus please have mercy on such a retarded breed

!

A couple days later, Sunday, it was dusty & hot

I stood jawin’ with another mentally retarded hot shot

in front of the wonderfully inspiring olde book mule

when up prances some kid lookin’ quite triumphant and cool

~

I asked him something and he just stepped up to the spot

plucked up the book n’ handed me what made it bought

“Now you can eat tonight!”  yelled Pa from across the lot

yeeeeeeeap, just what the world needs, another damn hot shot

~

Well, the kid got The Saga and I got a meal

though it cost more than the book, still I feel

pretty good about thee ol’ pa who finally pulled thru

then there’s the kid, I wonder, is his name Billy too?
