Just as Baptism gives us new life, Eucharist nourishes that life, and Reconciliation restores it when it is wounded, Confirmation strengthens us for our ongoing journey of faith through the gifts of the Holy Spirit (cf. CCC 1285). It deepens what God has already begun in us and continues to offer: grace for discipleship, courage in witness, and strength for service (cf. CCC 1302–1303).
The Archdiocese of Chicago requires a minimum of two years of preparation for adolescent candidates seeking Confirmation (excluding those in the Order of Christian Initiation).
At Old St. Mary’s, this formation typically begins in the Fall of 6th grade, with the Rite of Confirmation celebrated in the Spring of 7th grade. In 8th grade, students continue with a year of reflection, service, and formation, helping them grow in their understanding of Confirmation as a lifelong commitment to faith, not a one-time event or “graduation” from religious education.
Confirmation is not a rite of passage tied to age or academic achievement. It’s a response to what God is already doing in a young person’s life and a way to step more deeply into the call of discipleship.
Candidates must be enrolled in either Old St. Mary’s School or Sunday Faith Formation. They must also have completed at least one full year of faith formation prior to beginning their sacramental preparation. To receive Confirmation in 7th grade, a student must have been enrolled in religious formation during 6th grade.
Confirmation preparation involves more than classroom learning. In addition to regular sessions, there will be retreats, service opportunities, and gatherings outside of class time to help form the whole person in faith.
What does preparation include?
– A deeper knowledge of the faith and the Sacrament of Confirmation
– Opportunities for prayer and personal reflection
– Moral formation and discernment
– Participation in the life of the parish and the wider Church
– Mission and service experiences that reflect the Gospel call
– Regular participation at Sunday Mass and Holy Days of Obligation
We look forward to walking with our young people and their families as they prepare to receive the Holy Spirit in a new and powerful way, strengthened to live their faith with purpose, joy, and courage.
