To the Fleet AND To all yachts underway
โš ๏ธ
( or preparing to depart )

Across oceans and coastlines, we are navigating a world that is changing fast. Safety and security at sea are no longer static considerations – they have now become evolving realities shaped by geopolitics, technology, and risk factors.

To better understand what captains are seeing, feeling, and planning, we are launching a global Yacht Safety and Security Survey.

This is a call from one skipper to another.

Your input matters if you are coastal cruising,ย  ย still in the planning phase or are crossing oceans, The strength of this effort depends on honest, broad participation. Share your perspective, and encourage fellow captains to do the same. The more voices we gather, the clearer the picture we can build for all. And the Results will be shared !

Please take this survey – take a few minutes. Pass it along. Help us chart a safer course forward.

Respectfully,
Captain Dietmar

TAKE THE SURVEY

OpenCPN:
The Free โ€˜Swiss Army Knifeโ€™ of Navigation Software

OPENCPN 1

Letโ€™s be honest, half the time weโ€™re out there, weโ€™re one bad navigation decision away from becoming a cautionary tale on some forum. Expensive plotters work great until the subscription expires or the screen blacks out from sun or salt, but who has the space or cash to carry a spare? Enter OpenCPN โ€“ the free, sailor-built chart plotter that does everything most fancy gear does, plus a few party tricks.

Developed by actual cruisers who test it in real conditions, OpenCPN is basically the Swiss Army knife of navigation software. It runs vector charts, raster charts, satellite MBTiles or KAPs, CM93 (yes, those gloriously unofficial worldwide wonders), and even pilot charts that tell you when the trades will feel grumpy. Many chart sets are available free of charge, and there are paid options too. Add the Climatology plugin (one of many) and suddenly youโ€™re staring at historic wind roses like a weather nerd with superpowers. Need to switch from NOAA vectors to Pacific Mexico satellite pictures mid-passage? One keystroke. Want to declutter the screen so you can actually see the reef youโ€™re about to kiss? Done. And it runs on the same wheezing Windows laptop youโ€™ve had since the Obama administration โ€“ no fancy graphics card, no drama. Itโ€™s perfect for boats running on 12 volts.

This is where the snack-powered guide comes in. Written by someone who has taught this exact method to hundreds of cruisers in seminars from Canada to Panama over ten years, itโ€™s not a dry manual โ€” itโ€™s a proper passage plan. Youโ€™ll prep your machine, wrestle Windows into submission, install OpenCPN and a killer plugin (Climatology alone is worth the price of admission: zero), organize your charts so they actually make sense, and discover the Chart Groups feature that lets you flip between chart types faster than you can say โ€œwhereโ€™s the rum?โ€

Youโ€™ll start by โ€œpreparing delicious snacksโ€ (because waiting for Windows Update can be like a long ocean crossing). Then defrag, clean, update, and finally install while overcoming the Windows โ€œunknown publisherโ€ panic attack. The guide walks you through plugin installation (Climatology is used as the example, and it is pure magic), chart organization that actually makes sense (the
C:/CHARTS directory on your boat computer will become a digital compendium of neatly arranged worldwide charts), and the genius Chart Groups feature that lets you flip between chart types faster than you can say โ€œpass the rum.โ€

Follow the guide and youโ€™ll end up with a setup thatโ€™s fast, flexible, and easy to use. From there you can explore the software, add optional modules (plugins), and focus on using it rather than the installation process.

A cruiser-circumnavigator who took the workshop with me in Panama said, โ€œYour introduction to OpenCPN that you gave me and others in Shelter Bay was the foundation for our safe cruising in the Pacific.โ€

Bottom line: OpenCPN is free, battle-tested, and smarter than many paid options. Every cruiser owes it to their future self (and their insurance company) to get it up and running, for primary use, as a backup, or for a few of its unique features. So grab some of your favourite snacks, settle in, and follow the guide. Your voyages โ€“ if not your waistline โ€“ will thank you.

Hi there,
Thought Iโ€™d send you the video of the microburst over Banana Bay in Golfito on March 10. Fingers broke away. We abandoned our finger and used every line on the boat to tie to the pilings. Thatโ€™s my Daughter greeting me at the boat, sure that we lost the boat. Poor girl. Just a few scratches and frayed nerves. 3 days later they almost had things put back together. Out at the anchorage one of the boats that didnโ€™t drag anchor clocked a 71 knots for a moment.

OCEAN POSSE FLEET ๐Ÿ›ฐ๏ธ TRACKING
SPONSORED BY PREDICT WIND

PredictWind Tracking

PredictWind remains the primary tool for following fleet movements. Positions can be shared through each vesselโ€™s onboard tracker, with AIS data available as a secondary reference via online sites. Neither system provides a continuous or fail-safe plot. Gaps in position reports are normal and are most often the result of power management, antenna range, satellite coverage, or a deliberate decision by the skipper to remain off the grid for a time.

An absence of position updates is not, by itself, grounds to assume difficulty or to initiate a response.

Every yacht is responsible for maintaining its own float plan, scheduled check-ins, and clearly defined escalation procedures. Tracking is a useful situational awareness aid for the fleet – it does not replace proper passage planning, watchkeeping discipline, and direct communications between vessels.

In the historic harbor of Cartagena Murcia, Spain where centuries of seafaring and conquest still echo off massive historic fortifactions, the Ocean Posse event at the end of Septemebr – is a proper gathering of captains, crews, and kindred spirits. Each year, our timing aligns with the famed Cartagena Carthaginians and Romans Festival, when the city transforms into a living stage of ancient rivalry.

For over ten days, Cartagena re-lives the epic clashes between Rome and Carthage. Expect marching legions, war drums, torchlit parades, and full-scale battle reenactments along the waterfront. The energy is unmistakable – a mix of history, theatre, and Mediterranean celebration that spills from the plazas and are paved with polished marble slabs into the marina.

Right in the thick of it, the Ocean Posse hosts its own dockside affair. And a proper marinerโ€™s gathering with Flor de Cana Rum and a BBQ. We lay on a traditional pork ribs, slow-cooked and shared among friends new and old, paired with free-flowing rum that carries the conversation well into the evening. It is less an event and more a reunion of those drawn by the same call of the sea and for many a gathering prior to crossing the Atlantic.

Why plan to be there ? Because this is where cruising life meets culture in full stride. You are not just visiting a port – you are stepping into a massive and fun moment. Between the spectacle ashore and the camaraderie afloat, Cartagena delivers something rare: a place where stories are made, not just told.

Come join us, raise a glass, and take your place in the ranks – Roman, Carthaginian, or simply Ocean Posse.

ย Panama Canal WEATHER

The weather along the Panama Canal is defined less by seasons in the traditional sense and more by the steady rhythm of tropical patterns. For captains staging on either side, understanding this cycle is part of good seamanship.

Panama sits firmly in the tropics, and temperatures remain remarkably consistent year-round, typically ranging between 24ยฐC and 32ยฐC (75ยฐF to 90ยฐF). The real distinction is between the dry season and the rainy season.

The dry season, generally from December through April, is what most cruisers encounter when arriving from the Caribbean side near Colรณn. Skies are often clear, humidity is lower, and the trade winds are more established. These easterly trades can accelerate through the canal cut and across Gatun Lake, occasionally producing short, steep chop in open sections. Visibility is excellent, making navigation straightforward.

From May through November, the rainy season settles in. This does not mean continuous rain, but rather powerful, localized squalls that build through the afternoon. These can bring heavy downpours, reduced visibility, and shifting winds. Lightning activity increases, and while sustained winds are typically moderate, gusts within squalls can be sharp and unpredictable.

Inside the canal itself, wind is often less of a concern than rain and visibility. The surrounding jungle creates a sheltered environment, but it also traps heat and moisture, making conditions feel heavy and humid, especially during lock transits where airflow is minimal.

Tidal influence is negligible within the canal but becomes relevant at both entrances. On the Pacific side, tidal ranges can exceed 4โ€“5 meters, creating strong currents and timing considerations when approaching or departing.

In practical terms, the canal can be transited year-round. With proper preparation, awareness of squall patterns, and attention to timing at either end, the weather presents no serious obstacleโ€”only another element to be respected on the passage between oceans.

Found After Delayed Cuba Relief Passage

Two sailing vessels taking part in a humanitarian aid passage to Cuba were reported missing after losing contact during the trip from Isla Mujeres, Mexico, toward Havana.

The vessels were later found about 80 nautical miles northwest of Havana. All nine people aboard were safe, and the boats were reported intact.

Initial concern grew after communication stopped and position updates were no longer coming through. Search efforts were launched, but the outcome appears to have been a delayed passage rather than a distress situation.

The incident is a reminder that offshore delays, weather, and communication gaps can quickly turn into a missing-vessel report, even when the crew and vessel are still managing the situation.

Captain’s takeaway: Not every overdue yacht is in immediate danger, but lost communications offshore can escalate concern very quickly.

  • Italy is shaping up for a busy 2026 Med season. Call ahead, especially for popular stops.

๐ŸŒŠ South Pacific – ๐ŸŒฌ๏ธ Cyclone Activity – Late Season Still Alive

The South Pacific cyclone season is tapering, but not done yet. There are still active low-pressure systems forming east of Vanuatu and around Fiji, with intermittent intensification.

Fiji and Vanuatu remain in the risk corridor
Squally conditions, shifting winds, and heavy rain bands reported
Sea states locally confused near convergence zones

Takeaway:
Do not treat April as โ€œsafeโ€ yet. Late-season systems tend to be erratic and poorly forecast.
