This is my first blog post in several weeks. That alone tells a story.
Writing has never been something I have to force. It has always been a place of clarity, release, and truth telling for me. So when even sitting down to write began to feel like a chore, I knew something deeper was happening.
For weeks, I told myself I was just tired. Residual fatigue, I thought. After all, I had been sick. My body had been through a lot. Of course I was exhausted. Of course my motivation was low. Of course I needed more rest.
But rest did not fix it.
The fatigue lingered in a way that felt different. Not restorative tiredness, but a bone deep weariness that sleep did not even begin to touch. The kind that makes getting dressed feel like effort. The kind that steals momentum, creativity, and joy.
And then there were the tears. Not always for a clear reason. Sometimes they came while driving. Sometimes while folding laundry. Sometimes in the quiet moments when nothing was wrong, yet everything felt heavy. I hadn’t lost my voice, but I had lost my light.
🍂 The Slow Creep of the Darker Months
Seasonal Affective Disorder doesn’t arrive loudly. It moves in quietly, alongside shorter days and longer nights. Less sunlight. More time indoors. Disrupted rhythms.
For me, it showed up as:
• Persistent fatigue
• Lack of motivation
• Emotional heaviness
• Sadness without a clear story
• Crying that surprised me
• Withdrawal from things I normally love
• A resistance to creating and expressing
What made it harder to recognize was how easy it was to blame something else. A virus. Stress. Hormones. Burnout. Life. Love, unrequited.
But this felt familiar. Cyclical.
And that distinction matters, because when we mislabel what is happening, we often choose solutions that miss the root entirely.
🌬️ How I Ended 2025
I ended 2025 by releasing something that had been weighing heavily on me for a very long time. Not dramatically, not loudly, but honestly.
I spoke a truth that had been sitting in my body, unexpressed. I stopped carrying something that was never meant for me. And when I did, something remarkable happened.
My nervous system recalibrated.
That is the only way I know how to describe it. A settling. A sense of internal alignment returning. The kind of relief that does not come from fixing, but from letting go.
What surprised me most was how much emotional weight had been quietly amplifying my physical and mental exhaustion. Once it was released, I could literally feel my body exhale.
Not cured or suddenly overflowing with energy, but steadier, clearer, and more regulated.
⚠️ The Antidepressant Cycle We Rarely Question
In conventional healthcare, seasonal affective disorder is often met with a fast and familiar response.
The prescription pad.
Antidepressants are frequently offered as a first line solution, sometimes without meaningful discussion about long term use, tapering risks, or whether a chemical imbalance is actually present.
What is rarely said out loud is this:
Antidepressants can be difficult and sometimes dangerous to start and stop.
They alter neurotransmitter signaling in ways the brain adapts to. Discontinuation can lead to rebound depression, anxiety, emotional blunting, insomnia, and in some cases suicidal ideation. Many people are never warned.
For a condition that follows a seasonal cycle, this can create a pattern of dependence rather than resolution.
That doesn’t mean antidepressants never have a place. But they should not be the default when safer, foundational supports have not been explored.
🌿 Supporting the Body Instead of Silencing It
Seasonal Affective Disorder is not a personal failure. It is a biological response to light deprivation, circadian rhythm disruption, inflammation, nutritional depletion, and nervous system stress.
Here are some of the natural and practical supports that have helped me interrupt the cycle.
☀️ Light Is Medicine
Morning outdoor light exposure, even on cloudy days. Opening blinds immediately upon waking is a must.
🧠 Nervous System Care
• Slower mornings
• Gentle movement
• Reduced evening screen exposure
• Earlier bedtimes aligned with natural rhythms
🥩 Stabilizing Blood Sugar
• Protein rich meals
• Eating consistently
• Reducing sugar and ultra processed foods
💊 Targeted Nutrient Support
• Vitamin D
• Magnesium
• B vitamins
• Gut support
Testing matters. Guessing helps less.
🕯️Emotional Permission
There is grief in the darker months. Grief for warmth, movement, expansion, and light. Suppressing that grief often deepens it. The holidays can bring out a whole different kind of sadness and longing.
Allowing yourself to slow is not weakness. It is wisdom.
🌿Practical Comforts for Low Days
There are days when advice like exercise more or think positive feels impossible. When depression is present, even basic care can feel overwhelming. On those days, the goal is not productivity. The goal is regulation, safety, and gentle sensory support.
These are not cures. They are anchors.
🚿 The Power of the Shower
A shower can feel like a mountain when energy is low. But water is one of the fastest ways to support the nervous system.
• Warm water relaxes muscles and emotional tension
• Cool water at the end can improve alertness
• Sitting on the shower floor is allowed
• Crying in the shower is release
Add a few drops of lavender or eucalyptus essential oil to the steam by placing it on a washcloth nearby.
🧴 Lotion as Grounding
Touch reassures the nervous system that the body is safe.
• Choose a thick lotion or oil
• Apply slowly and intentionally
• Focus on sensation rather than appearance
Helpful scents:
• Lavender for calm
• Vanilla for comfort
• Frankincense for grounding
• Bergamot for mood support
🌸 Scent and the Emotional Brain
Smell directly affects mood and memory.
Ways to use scent
• Diffuser
• Roller oil on wrists or neck
• Linen spray on pillows
• One drop on a cotton ball nearby
Helpful essential oils:
• Lavender for anxiety and sleep
• Citrus oils for low mood
• Peppermint for mental fog
• Ylang ylang for emotional heaviness
🕯️Soften the Environment
Depression worsens in harsh settings.
• Dim lighting
• Candles
• Natural light when possible
• Blankets or soft textures
Create a space that feels safe, not demanding.
👕 Wear Comfort Without Apology
Comfort supports regulation.
• Soft fabrics
• Loose clothing
• Warm socks
Looking put together is not the goal. Feeling supported is.
🍲 Gentle Nourishment
Feeding yourself does not require effort heavy meals.
• Broth or soup
• Eggs
• Yogurt
• Protein shakes
• Toast
Something is always better than nothing.
📵 Reduce Mental Overload
• Fewer notifications
• Less news
• Gentle music or silence
• Nature sounds
Quiet supports healing. Unplug.
🤍 One Thing Is Enough
Depression tells you that if you cannot do everything, nothing matters, but that is not true.
One shower counts.
One meal counts.
One honest breath counts.
You do not have to fix your life today. You only have to stay connected to yourself.
🚨 If You Are in Crisis or Feel Unsafe
If at any point your thoughts feel overwhelming, scary, or unsafe, support is available; you do not have to handle it alone.
United States
• Call or text 988 for the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline
• Call 911 if you are in immediate danger
International
• Visit findahelpline.com to locate crisis support in your country
If Calling Feels Hard
• Text or chat options are available through 988
• Reach out to a trusted friend, family member, or healthcare provider
Reaching out is not weakness. It is a protective response.
You matter. Your life matters. And this moment does not define the rest of your story.
🤍Ongoing Support Through Remnant Healthcare
If you are walking through depression, seasonal affective disorder, or nervous system exhaustion and need more than self care tips, you do not have to navigate it alone.
Through Remnant Healthcare, members have access to ongoing support that bridges holistic care and professional mental health resources. This includes connection to licensed therapists, along with a care model that honors the whole person, not just symptoms.
Remnant exists for people who want support without being rushed into medication as the first or only option, and who value informed consent, nervous system regulation, and compassionate care.
Memberships start at just $30/Month, making support accessible without long term contracts or pressure.
Sometimes the most healing step is simply having someone walk alongside you.
Support is available when you are ready.
🤍 Naming It Changed Everything
What brought the most relief for me was not a supplement or a strategy.
It was naming what was happening.
This was not laziness, failure, or me falling apart.
This was Seasonal Affective Disorder, and it was amplifying every other thing I had been dealing with in the background.
Once named, it became easier to navigate. I stopped fighting my body and started supporting it. I stopped shaming myself for not moving at summer speed in winter, and I stopped assuming something was wrong with me.
Healing doesn’t always begin with doing more, sometimes it begins speaking your truth and letting the nervous system settle. Sometimes, that alone is enough to let the light back in.💖

About the Author:
Kimberly Overton, BSN, RN, BC-FMP, is a Registered Nurse, entrepreneur, and fierce advocate for medical freedom and informed consent. With a background in critical care and acute patient management, she bore witness to the systemic failures of a healthcare system corrupted by profit-driven protocols—protocols that led to medical murders disguised as care.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Kimberly made the bold decision to resign from traditional bedside nursing, standing in protest against coercive mandates, the unethical use of Remdesivir, and the rollout of dangerous, ineffective COVID “vaccines.” This defining moment propelled her to establish Nurse Freedom Network, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to empowering nurses, safeguarding patient rights, and exposing corruption within the healthcare system.
Today, she continues her mission at the bedside as a Hospice nurse, where she brings dignity, presence, and compassion to the end-of-life journey—honoring the sacred transition and advocating for comfort, truth, and informed decisions. Her experience in hospice care further reinforces the importance of understanding every medical intervention and upholding the nurse’s role as a protector of patient safety and peace.
Expanding on her mission, she launched Remnant Healthcare, providing holistic, patient-centered alternatives that honor medical autonomy, informed consent, and compassionate care. As host of The Nurses of America Out Loud, Kimberly amplifies the movement for healthcare reform, medical freedom, and the unwavering defense of human dignity.
Originally from Boston, Massachusetts, and now residing in Hendersonville, Tennessee, her mission is to disrupt the broken system, hold the profiteers accountable, and reclaim healthcare on a foundation of truth, ethics, and respect for human life—restoring humanity to the healing profession.
