Another excellent NiF vid by Alps. I love how gritty and raw this is, the song has such a pounding, rhythm to it as well as the raunchy guitar line and the editing enhances this beautifully: angry, violent, you can just feel the POV character's rage and frustration boiling under the surface and then exploding.
Doom Days (WandaVision) by Jayne L
Another great WandaVision vid. The build in this was spectacular and the use of frames and framing to signify the divisions between Wanda's reality and fantasy worlds was super super clever. Really intelligent vidmaking.
The Sky is a Neighbourhood (Daredevil) by Nestra
HOLY SHIT. This is so so so good. The aerial shot at the start just draws you in and then Nestra throws you headfirst into the explosive action, the editing of which is so unbelievably tight that it feels like a rollercoaster ride from start to finish. The combination of movement and musicality (the song choice is PERFECTION and oh my god those FINGER CLICKS) makes for a completely satisfying, powerful, and relentless vid that starts with a bang and manages to keep building and building and building. Just stunning.

Potential Breakup Song (Smallville) by sisabet
IT WAS HIS FUCKING BIRTHDAY. Ahhhhhh god the nostalgic feels that this brought forth in me. PERFECT song choice and the love that sisabet has for this source and this ship and Lex fucking Luthor is in every single frame. It was SO SO good and makes me so very happy and made me remember why Smallville was the early fandom of my heart. <333
Genghis Khan (Hannibal) by Tafadhali
I adore this. The song is such a perfect encapsulation of how deeply fucked up Hannibal and Will are whilst also being bouncy and dynamic. The editing is so great here too, it feels completely synchronised to the instrumentation as well as the beat and it's just immensely satisfying to watch as a result. Is it weird to say a Hannibal vid makes me joyful? Well it does.
Tunnels (Interstellar) by Cherry
This vid is fucking INCREDIBLE. I said on Twitter that not only was it my personal favourite of the con but also possibly one of my favourite vids of all time. I've been thinking about it constantly since it premiered and have watched it 2-3 times a day since. It is a goddamn masterpiece.
The editing and musicality in Cherry's vids is always superb and this vid is, for me, one of the best examples of how music + motion constructs really really deep emotional engagement and affect. The song she chose is in and of itself incredibly layered and punches hard both rhythmically and emotionally and the vid does the same - the pacing is relentless––until it's not––and when the music breaks down to stillness and the ethereal vocals, the editing changes to match in tone and movement and rhythm. I particularly love the slow circular movement and images that match the circularity of the music and the stillness and pathos (Cherry isn't afraid to hold space for the sheer emotion on these actors' faces.) It's just completely phenomenal.

Nirvana in Fire again! There were SEVEN NiF vids across Premieres (6) and also my Dessa vidshow (1) and this is another really strong vid for a (I believe, I have yet to see the source but very very excited to) minor character. The song choice seems perfect for the character's energy and I love the steady and weighty pace of this vid, I just felt really really drawn in and connected to this poignant and deeply affecting character.

Hai hai so I attended virtual VidUKon last weekend and it was truly amazing. I'm going to do a bunch of recposts because I was utterly blown away by the incredible talent. So let's start with Premieres Part One!
The standard of the Premieres was absolutely stellar. 48 vids and I loved SO many of them and enjoyed many many more so here's a few that really sat with me.
Punks Don't Dance (Star Trek: Discovery) by bethofalltrades
This made me SO happy. It's fun and poignant in places and knows what's important i.e. Michelle Yeoh and Sonequa-Martin-Green's faces. The song went immediately onto my Spotify which is always the first sign that I loved a vid immensely.
5 Out of 6 (Ruroni Kenshin films) by naye
Like the majority of these vids I am unfamiliar with the source but oh wow does it not matter. This vid is gorgeous. The editing is superb, I felt pulled along so seamlessly for the whole thing and using the orchestral version of Dessa's 5 out of 6 is just such a brilliant choice. Epic, exciting, one of my absolute faves from the con.
Que Sera Sera (Star Trek: Voyager and Star Trek: Picard) by ohvienna
ohvienna is hands-down one of my favourite vidders. Her song choices are ALWAYS on point and she has this ability to explore pain in such a beautiful and understated way that it just sits with you for days and days. This is no exception and the parallels here between the different eras of Seven of Nine's life are just heartbreaking. The final shot is going to stay in my head forever.
She Does Not Brave the War (Nirvana in Fire) by alpheratz
The first of MANY Nirvana in Fire vids and this is a perfect example of what alpheratz does so well: quietness, solitude, the absolute beauty of simplicity. Achingly beautiful.

Jinky always has the boldest, most complex music choices that work on so many levels and this is SUPERB. The editing is so incredibly flawless here and nothing is left in the tank. This is a relentless vid and I'm still thinking about it nearly a week after seeing it.

I have watched this vid maybe half a dozen times now and I REALLY want to watch the source. It's a wonderful recruitment vid. Emotive and epic and beautifully edited (as per usual with helcinda's work) and the SONG. Gah. So good. I really really love this vid immensely.

I really, really loved this. I need to see Nirvana in Fire and honestly so many of these vids are such an incredible advertisement for it. Alps is such an affective vidder but they so often make vids that are quirky and ironic and fun and it's very easy to forget that they also make vids that are perfectly incisive and full of emotion that hit HARD. They draw connections visually that are always brilliant and never make the obvious choice. Love this.

We stayed witharysteia for 2 days, so we were able to watch the SPN finale with her and the very next day she inducted us into The Untamed and by last Saturday we had watched the entire series. And... I have not fallen in fannish love like this in years. God. Where to start.

Okay so 2020 has been a fucking trashfire of a year for so many reasons. I feel like I don't have the emotional capacity to get into it here but I am so sorry to all my US friends who are suffering today of all days.
Consequently, this awful year has seen me hurtling back into fannish love with Supernatural, which was unexpected but it has honestly saved my mental health these last months.
And I have started vidding! It is bringing me so much joy and I haven't shared it here but I realised today I probably should given I am producing fanworks again for the first time in YEARS. This is my first proper fanvid and I feel I have gotten more adept since I posted on AO3 in July but posting here for posterity anyway :)
