11:25 am - Waiting by the phone...
Was woken by the 'standby' call from the transplant hospital. (!!!) No, I am not doing nothing - I'm trying to eat breakfast while my stomach is NOT interested in food.

10:36 am - I Hope This Is Not an Indication of How My Day Will Go
I am overdue for a dialysis test that's supposed to be done every three months. It involves saving the used dialysis bags for 24 hours. Everything was find til the last bag - I discovered it had a hole in it when I realized I was standing in liquid. It was all over the bathroom floor. Rar. Nothing like cleaning the bathroom before breakfast.

So I get to do it all over again next week. :(

06:03 pm - Moroccan Beef reproduction thoughts
Ok - beef tips, dried apricots, garbanzo beans, carrots, and tomatoes. Yep.

'Moroccan spices'? My palette isn't sensitive enough to pick them all up...I got the curry and the cumin. Anyone wanna take a guess? I do't think I'm tasting any cinnamon...

03:39 pm - Insulin tricks & rain?
So I sm well aware that exercise decreases one's need for insulin in many ways - it increases metabolism so one burns more calories, and increases insulin sensitivity. I know this, and my sliding scale regimen helps. But I have already reduced my insulin dose by 20% ALREADY so far, and I still seem to be taking too much.

I don't really wanna increase my caloric consumption, since part of the reason for increased exercise is to drop a couple pounds, but that's what's been happening - just to recover from the lows blood sugars.

I think I'm gonna have to bute the big one and lower the longer acting insulin...

And on a totally unrelated note - there's rain on the radar. Not a solid clump of it, but scattered showers. Finfers crossed...

06:35 pm - Pumpkins and Prescriptions
The grocery store had pumpkins for sale yesterday! Autumin is (finally) coming!

Tried to pick up two prescriptions yesterday, but failed spectacularly. I forgot the card for the foundation that is covering the cost of my Sensipar that they just recently put me on, and I simply don't have $250 for a 30 day of phosphorous binders. (Damn Medicare donut hole. Thankfully Obama Care will close that up soon) Phoaphorus Binders are pretty much a requirement for Kidney Failure, since there's only so much one can limit through diet alone. I can't take the cheaper ones, cince those are calcium based, and that raises my calcium up too high and causes calcium deposits. So it's time to find another way to get the cost covered.

Anyone who doesn't believe in health care reform isn't living in the real world. The recent Health Care reform Act helped, but it jusr did not go far enough. We need more reform, not less, and SOON.

12:16 am - Actively waiting again
My transplant coordinator called today to tell me I'm no longer on hold on the list. Yay I guess. :)

The whple 'hurry up and wait' thing seems to be the norm. You know - 'you hsve lrdd yhsn two hours to make a three hour drive and then toy surgery won't be for another 12 hours after you get here' thing that happened last time. Rar. But I was told that if I can't get there that fast I simply can't and they'll have to deal. (they can always pass me up if need be) But there's no way to get there faster than it will take to drive it - even a plane would take the same amount of time given the distance and the hassles involved in flying. So there's no point in getting anxious about it.

She jokingly told me not to refuse he next transplant. I responded by telling me not to give me a medication I'm not allergic to.

ETA I was told there is no internet access in the ICU, but I'll be able to access it from the cafeteria and other places once I'm ip and around. Not sure how long that will be - probably close to at least a week. I'll try to at least post a short note before I go, but honestly, there may not be time. I need to go see if the phone post option still works.

03:47 am - FO; New skirt (with pic)

This is my most recent finished object – the skirt I’ve been wrestling with for months. I didn’t use a pattern, which was part of it, as well as the modification made to the hem so it would hang at the same level all the way around.

It’s from approx 1 yard of 60″ wide (I think) challis, and came out of my stash.

05:32 pm - Burn Baby Burn
It was bound to happen. It's been the hottest summer ever, and the worst drought in decades. Now the first cool front is coming in, and the wins have kicked up and the humidity has dropped even lower.

Wild Fires. Everywhere. 3.5 million acres destroyed, accordingto Gov, Perry. (Wow don't he look fancy in his expensive Armani suit. :-/)

Locally, no lives have been lost. But hundreds have needed evacuation, and the Bastrop County animal shelter had to evacuate all the animals they had to here in Austin. Apparenlty some people couldn't evacuate their pets.

I was concerned about some friends in Pflugerville, but they turned out to be ok. The fire made it close enough to damage houses two houses away, Otherwise, I haven't heard of anyone else in danger.

But when I came home from a trip to the grocery store, I smell smoke! Turns out some idiot is GRILLING. In the middle of an apartment comples. In this weather. I know it's Labor Day, but still...WTF??

07:30 pm - Whatever happened to the middle ground?
Why is it that if something is not blatantly 'Liberal', it MUST be Conservative? (And vice versa) Why must everything be black and white noways? Is no one else capable of seeing a middle gtound? (what used to be called 'centrist')

And why can't one side respect the others
position? Why is it that if one disagrees with someone they immediately go to ad hominem attacks? Whatever happened to rationality and calm consideration?

Really, the world is not black and white. It may be simpler to try to see it that way, but you only do everyone (including and especially oneself) a disservice to see it that way.

OMG It got to 112 degrees here today. That's not the heat index, but the actual temperature. A new record high for today.

Yesterday was only 110. (only??)

And it's not supposed to be any cooler til Thursday, when it will only get up into the 90s.

10:24 am
Woke up this morning to a phone call from someone at the transplant hospital. Seems some of the reports from all the tests I had this summer didn't make it to them, and they were calling to ask if I'd had them done. *sigh*

I called the gyn first, since I couldn't remember when my last pap smear was. And got an unexpected hassle - they wanted me to come in and sign a release form before they would send the results. WTF? I've never needed to sign one before, and I did ask them to send a copy on when I was in for the test. So they're going to check with the doctor and get back to me. But when I called the transplant guy back, he said he'd just fax the release form they had to them and get it that way.

The stress test results were easy - I just called my dialysis nurse. :) But I know I asked the cardiology office to send them on to the transplant folks when I was first in, and again when I was in for the test. Yeah - REALLY not impressed with the doc's ofice staff.

But the guy from the transplant hospital did say I was at the top of the list, so I assume that means I'm back active. I wasn't awake enough to actually ASK. :)

10:19 am - My boobs are fine
Yeah. Finally got the call from the Radiology group about my mammogram of a month ago. They had to track down the one from 5 years ago, and that took what seemed like forever. But that showed no real changes in that time.

So yeah - my boobs are fine.

Do they make male transplant candidates get screened for prostate and testicular cancer? They seem awfully concerned with my female parts...

01:57 pm - Insomnia with a cause
Tomorrow's meeting with the transplant team's psychiatrist seems to be getting to me - I barely got two hours of sleep last night. Iam really nervous about it - there's so much riding on it. I just wish I could close my eyes and open them again to find myself two three weeks post transplant.

Maybe he ca help me get a better idea howmuch this kidney will do for me. Other people talk about it like it's almost this magic bullet that will make my life all sweetness ad light afterward, but I strogly suspect that's not true - which means I'm thinking about all the things it WON'T change. And that's not a good mind-set to be in.

My N key seems to have something stuck under it and it's making it flaky, and that is annoying me. Off to clean it.

11:13 pm - Signal Boost: Return of the DDoS
Originally posted by deathpixie at Signal Boost: Return of the DDoS
For those wanting to know more about the recent DDoS attacks, yes, it looks like it was the Russian government trying to shut down the dissidents again.

As I said last time, while it's frustrating not to have access, LJ is a lot more than a social network platform. From the article:

"LiveJournal isn’t just a social network. It’s also a platform for organizing civic action. Dozens of network projects and groups mobilize people to solve specific problems — from defending the rights of political prisoners to saving endangered historic architecture in Moscow."

So while I know many are considering the move over to Dreamwidth and other such sites, supporting LJ is a way we can help support those who use it for more than a writing/roleplaying/social venue.

Also, as a FYI, LJ is giving paid users effected by the outage two weeks of paid time as compensation.

03:19 am - Friends with Benefits
Yes, it's late, but I cannot yet do my last exchange, so I'll blog.

Went to see this movie tonight. Not my usual fare, but it was at the Drafthouse, so it could NOT be all bad. And really, it wasn't. The first half of the movie was better then the last half - the last half was a stereotypical Hollywood Rom-Com. And even though there was a scene ,alomg fum of the ,usic used in Rom-Coms, they fell into that trap too. And I don't think it was in a tongue-in-cheek kinda way.

Woody Harrelson was great as the gay best friend. But there was a twist. I might be becoming a Woody Harrelson fan...first Zombieland, now this. I think I'm gonna Netflix a couple of his other movies.

The Drafhouse ran clips of some of Justin Timberlake's other comedy pieces - one of which was his one man summary of one of his times on SNL. Very funny. They did push their No Talking Zone, but not the clip of the drunk complaint on their voice mail.

This one. :)

12:27 pm - Gone With the Wind Costumes
Several of the costumes from Gone With the Wind are here at the Harry Ransom center. (Doessn't seem quite right does it?) Anyhow, the center has announced a project to restore several of them for the movie's 75th anniversary. Two of the pieces not being restored are Scarlett's silk wedding veil, which is so fragile now they say it will probably disintegrate if handled/ They will not attempt to restore the famous Curtain dress to its' original color, though the news piece did not say why.

I wonder if this means they';; be on display after restoration?
