This year, Now Play This celebrates its 11th and final edition, centred around the theme “Folk Games: The Stories We Play Together.” Folk games, with their simplicity, fluidity of rules, and emphasis on social context and cultural nuance, provide a unique lens through which we can rethink play. In this final edition, we invite everyone to engage with these ideas of emergent gameplay and communal meaning-making, as we explore how folk games can inspire new forms of play and connection.

Join us to celebrate and reflect on how play continues to shape the ways we come together and create!

Tickets can be purchased at Somerset House.

The final event in the Saturday progamme “Dreaming the Future of Experimental & Art-Games Events” is a closed-door session for people currently involved in the field or intending to join it. If you want to come please write to us at hello@nowplaythis.net

Friday

The Cologne Game Lab partners once again with Now Play This and Dr. David Murphy to present a dedicated day exploring the concept of Folk Games through talks, round tables, and playful sessions led by game designers and academics.

For the evening we have planned a relaxed meet-up focused on networking and reconnecting with the community, featuring a programme of live music and micro-talks. Plus play-test corners hosted by our University partners and a Boardgames & Books Nook. A celebration of playful creation and shared ideas.

You can come for the full day or join for the second part. Either way you will need a ticket!

Arrive 10 minutes before the start time to allow for arrival and ticket checks.

Saturday

Join us on Saturday for our family friendly day of making and live play. You’ll need a Saturday Morning or Saturday Afternoon ticket.

Both tickets grant access Now Play This’ Boardgames & Books Nook, plus a three-hour open creation space where you can alternate between three different workshops. The morning session ends with 30 minutes of Folk Games.

How to play – some workshops are drop-in and some are timed. Most of them have a maximum capacity of 20 at a time on a first come, first served basis.  There will be a second opportunity later in the session if you don’t get a spot at the start of the session. Arrive 10 minutes before the start time to allow for arrival and ticket checks.

Whether you have a ticket or not you are also invited to join our outdoor play proposals! Become part of one of ARCADE’s participatory dance games, follow the Tiny Games path around Somerset Houses’ corridors and grounds, and engage with the Strand Avian Society site-specific outdoor game.
