Role Overview
New Jersey Environmental Justice Alliance (NJEJA) seeks a motivated and detail-oriented Youth Climate Ambassador Program Supervisor to support a 6 week summer employment program, located in downtown Newark. This program exposes young adults (ages 16-20) to environmental career opportunities through site visits, hands-on activities, and community projects. In partnership with the Environmental Opportunities Center (EOC) Coordinator and the Deputy Director, this role will help to support young adults in their professional journey and prepare them for a future career in the environmental field. The Supervisor is responsible for meeting program objectives, communicating program needs, organizing and dispensing program supplies, and assisting in community project events. We are looking for someone who is both excited about environmental justice and who finds purpose in youth education and building long-term potential in others.

Role Overview
NJEJA seeks a Policy Fellow to support its environmental justice policy and advocacy efforts. This is an early-career, temporary position intended to provide hands-on experience in public policy and community engagement. The Fellow will work with the Director of Policy and other team members to implement community-informed campaigns and support coalition efforts.
You Are
This role is ideal for individuals exploring a career in policy or advocacy, and offers opportunities for mentorship, skill-building, and exposure to statewide environmental justice efforts. Our ideal candidate will have a background in Environmental Science, Environmental Policy, or a related field. The candidate will have a history of engaging with, analyzing, and developing policy, focusing on prioritizing community-led solutions.
Responsibilities
- Lead NJEJA’s policy efforts around energy transmission and grid reliability; research issue areas such as price increases, AI data centers, and transmission impacts of new renewable projects.
- Monitor actions taken by the NJ Board of Public Utilities and manage tracking, permits, and decisions.
- Support Director of Policy’s work around NJ EJ Law permit and re-permit application tracking.
- Acquire knowledge of cumulative impacts and mapping tools such as EJ Screen and the DEP’s EJ map tool.
- Assist in tracking environmental and climate policy developments at the state and local levels.
- Help prepare research briefs, bill markups, fact sheets, comment letters, memos, etc.
- Support the development of NJEJA’s policy and campaign materials.
- Represent NJEJA in coalitions, working groups, and public forums as assigned.
- Participate in community engagement efforts to inform and shape the organization’s policy priorities.
- Build cross-sector alliances with individuals and organizations working in Labor, Faith, Social Justice, and other areas aligned with our organizational values and approach.
- Attend occasional meetings, events, and hearings in NJ and regionally.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Experience and Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Studies, Public Policy, or a related field; a Master’s degree or current enrollment in a graduate program is a plus. We also welcome applicants who have completed a degree and plan to pursue further graduate education.
- Strong commitment to environmental, racial, and social justice values.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate across teams to ensure alignment across policy and community engagement efforts.
- Prior experience in policy, advocacy, organizing, or public interest work (internships or volunteer work included).
- The ability to work both virtually and in person at our Newark office.
- The capacity to travel locally 1-2 times per month, and regionally as needed.
- The ability to communicate NJEJA’s values and policy priorities to partners and decision-makers.

Founded in 2002 by a group of grassroots activists and advocates from North, South, and Central New Jersey, NJEJA has advanced Environmental Justice advocacy longer than any other New Jersey statewide group. NJEJA is developing our organizing and advocacy by expanding our team to include an Environmental Justice Program Manager.
Role Overview:
The EJ Program Manager will work closely with the Executive Director on areas including but not limited to:
- Advancing the advocacy goals of NJEJA
- Working in partnership with individuals and groups from historically marginalized communities
- Collaborating with organizational partners and governmental agencies to ensure that environmental justice is centered in environmental and climate policy

The main function of the EJ Program Manager will be to work in tandem with NJEJA staff, supporters, members, and others to further education, advocacy, and policies that prioritize justice and equity for New Jersey’s Low-Income Communities and Communities of Color, especially those already overburdened with pollution and at risk from climate disaster.
Core Responsibilities
This is a generalized breakdown of the types of activities the EJ Manager will be asked to perform and how much of their overall time will be used in that area of activity. This may change according to the needs of the organization.
Community Engagement – 35%
- Assist with the identification and engagement of individuals and groups in Environmental Justice communities throughout New Jersey.
- Interact directly with individuals and groups interested in technical assistance and/or training in key Environmental Justice and Climate Justice issues and campaigns.
- Develop and deliver educational resources on environmental and climate justice.
- Engage community partners in an iterative way to provide up-to-date information to frontline communities and to get feedback on legislative and policy proposals from community-based partners.
- Create opportunities for community-based partners and organizations to have a seat at the table as policies are shaped and moved forward, recognizing the principle that “Environmental Justice demands the right to participate as equal partners at every level of decision-making, including needs assessment, planning, implementation, enforcement, and evaluation.”
- Support NJEJA members and their communities in environmental and climate campaigns.
Advocacy 25%
- Apply NJEJA’s Environmental and Climate Justice Lens to Public Policy.
- Remain apprised of emerging environmental and climate-related policy (at the state, federal and local levels), flagging key policies with NJEJA Staff and Board for internal discussion.
- Support development of public policy priorities for the organization in direct consultation with the ED, Board members, and appropriate partners.
- Research and prepare draft comments and briefings on proposed policies related to key issues.
- Work with NJEJA staff and others to develop public-facing advocacy materials, including but not limited to reports, briefing papers, comment letters, fact sheets, memos of support, and action alerts.
- Engage and educate representatives from public agencies, partner organizations, and policymakers on environmental and climate justice issues.
Partnerships and Ally Engagement 25%
- Collaborate with existing partners and coalitions in support of key issues, and work to cultivate new allies.
- Cultivate strategic relationships and influential partnerships to further NJEJA objectives on priority issues.
- Attend and participate in designated local, statewide, and/or national coalition meetings, representing the interests of NJEJA and its members.
- Help organize convenings and facilitate meetings with stakeholders and policymakers as assigned.
- Assist in fundraising efforts related to assigned issue areas.
- Engage interns, volunteers, consultants, and other affiliates on specific projects and priority areas.
Communications and Public Speaking 15%
- Represent NJEJA at public-facing events such as public hearings, press events, national conferences, panels, and webinars as assigned.
- Work with our Communications Team to develop social media and earned media strategies.
- Conduct written and verbal outreach and promotions on priority issues and campaigns.
Required Experience and Qualifications:
A good candidate will not necessarily have expertise in every area listed but will have knowledge covering most of the below and expertise in some.

Salary and Benefits
This is a full-time, grant-funded, non-exempt position with medical, dental, and vision benefits as well as paid holidays. The starting salary will range from $50-60k yearly, depending on experience. There is a 90-day probationary period, and some benefits will not take effect until the end of that period. There is ample opportunity for professional development and growth within the organization. Role Overview
NJEJA is seeking a dynamic and dedicated Operations Manager to oversee special projects and crucial aspects of the day-to-day operations of the organization with autonomy and accountability. The Operations Manager will be an integral part of a team of staff, members, volunteers, and allies working together to protect overburdened communities from the legacy of harmful pollution and the threats of climate disasters. The Operations Manager will report directly to the Executive Director.

Responsibilities
- Work closely with the Executive Director to understand and operate from the mission and values of the organization
- Board Relations: Help prepare packets for board meetings, schedule Board committee meetings, communicate with board members to collect documentation, etc.
- Donor Relations: Assist with preparation of first drafts of grant applications and report-backs. Manage timelines and documentation for grants and report backs
- Technology: Work with database, website, social media, Google Suite, and more
- Administrative: Help manage receipts and payments, scheduling, meetings, proofreading, phone banking, etc.
- Programs: managing aspects of membership campaigns, fundraising campaigns, conferences, events, and other special projects

The Social Media Consultant will craft and implement an online media strategy to amplify NJEJA advocacy and organizing work, elevate the voices of its members and increase community engagement. The Social Media Consultant will work with the NJEJA staff and membership to develop and broadcast our brand and narrative.

This position is ideal for a person who utilizes emotional intelligence, deep-listening, and story-telling in their practice and demonstrates an understanding of and commitment to environmental and social justice. A good candidate would have experience in social media management, media work, strong persuasive writing, and effective communication skills. They would be able to thrive both in team settings and in independent work, be highly self-motivated, and able to multitask, organize, plan, prioritize, and perform assigned duties with minimal supervision.
Responsibilities
- Assisting with writing, reviewing, editing, and placing pieces for online publication.
- Developing and executing online organizing campaign strategies tied to our policy platforms and education campaigns, with the Communications Committee.
- Communicating with NJEJA team using online mediums like email, zoom, SMS, etc.
- Making regular website and social media updates of current and important news and events that relate to our work and campaigns.
- Facilitating and managing digital communication with our members, partners, and funders utilizing Powerbase CiviCRM; updating and running reports from database to assist in targeted outreach.
- Creating and managing email blasts, online petitions, and social media advertising campaigns.
- Developing and executing digital ads that complement NJEJA’s off-line organizing
- Creating graphics and digital visual content to communicate our message.
- Training and supporting NJEJA staff and members on how to best use social media tools to elevate our core messages.
- Attending and supporting organizational events by providing real-time content (e.g., live-tweeting, Facebook Livestream) to elevate the organization’s work.
- Building digital partnerships with other like-minded organizations.
- Acting as a liaison for the organization on social media platforms.
- Managing and analyzing key metrics to measure the performance of NJEJA’ s digital work.
Required Experience and Qualifications:
- Two or more years of experience using and managing social media platforms (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Instagram) to run environmental justice campaigns.
- Strong writing, editing, communications, and presentation skills.
- A high degree of comfort in managing multiple tasks and deadlines, and working in a fluid and fast-paced environment.
- Commitment to social and environmental justice, collaborative processes, and the participation and leadership of low-wealth Black, Indigenous people of color, environmental and front-line communities, and their organizations.
- Knowledge of (or experience of) the challenges faced by overburdened environmental justice communities.
- Sense of humor.
Preferred
- Experience working in a Communications department: writing public-facing materials (email blasts, social media posts, press releases, etc.) and working on digital campaigns that complement offline efforts.
- Experience placing op-eds and thought pieces in earned media publications.

- Knowledge of other key issue areas such as housing rights and/or racial and economic justice.

This is a project-based consultant position that will pay $20-40 hourly depending on skill and experience. The number of hours per month may vary (but can be standardized if the consultant wishes) and will not exceed 30.
