From my archives, Garden with Trees VI 2012. I thought it would be a change to post something brighter than my recent work, but I haven’t done anything bright since last year! So I’ve chosen this. The trees here have still not leafed in any significant way. feels like we are 6 weeks behind the normal season.

A sketch of a solitary copse of trees in a field in the Chiltern Hills made in early April, while the weather was still dull and wintry. I will post some more small sketches in the next week. It was still wintry in the Chiltern Hills over the Easter holidays and the distant landscape of gentle hills and woods looked drab on first view, but there was colour everywhere, especially as the grey cloud lifted and one’s eyes started to pick out the intense subtleties all around, especially the colouring that new buds give to the twiggy outlines of the still leafless trees. I used a tight earthy palette of colours for this drawing.
