Important Technical Information

Registering / Transferring a domain with Netlive

We are able to register most TOP LEVEL DOMAINS (TLD’s) such as .com .net .info .mobi etc. Note however that some country based TLD’s are limited to residents within that country.

Without Exception, all new domains and domain transfer fees must be paid for in full before any registration/transfer takes place. All domains will be valid for 1 year of registration date and renewable annually thereafter. Clients who have their Site Hosting or any other facilities through NETLIVE, and pay monthly, all .co.za and .com domains for said client will be converted to a monthy basis and added to the monthly subs invoice. These monthly domains can only be cancelled at NEXT anniversary date and a pro rata fee will be charged. Annual domains renewal fees need to be paid on or before LAPSE date reflected on the invoice in order to avoid reinstatement penalties. Note however that cancellation of any facilities do require a calendar month notice period.

Domain Ownership

As part of our ongoing efforts to ensure compliance with ICANN and Registry policies, we are required to provide the Registrant contact information for all domain names. This therefore reflects the client as the actual owner or end-user of each domain name. This ensures clients have greater control over their domain names and will streamline domain transfers between internet service providers, thus reducing potential delays and ownership disputes. A short questionaire will be sent to you for completion together with your first years registration fee invoice.

Which Server?

We run several servers in Germany and South Africa. We prefer to put all SA Based sites on our SA Server and Overseas Based sites with our German server. If you have a preference, please let us know prior to set up.

Reasonable effort against hackers

We make every effort to prevent your website, domain and mailboxes from being hacked. We run scans and monitor traffic flows all day and night, however, because of the human factor, it’s virtually impossible to prevent every possible hack attempt. Most hacks occur because of lax or weak password security or phishing emails. We institute very strong password rules and it’s up to you to keep your password safe.

Should your services with us become compromised we will make every effort to mitigate the effects and warn you accordingly. Certain processes will need to be followed, such as password resets, password strengthening, finding the source of the compromise and fixing it.

Notes about our email accounts

Our DEDICATED Servers are primarily used for our clients SITE HOSTING ensuring server resources are NOT SHARED and available to any website, at any time making your site fast, efficient and a pleasure to use.   We are happy to include LIMITED mailbox facilities.  This means mailboxes that remain under 1-2 GIG disk space.  Mailbox pricing is based on total of GIGABYTES of server space they use.   POP or IMAP accounts are included bearing in mind IMAP use up much more server space resulting in extra cost.

We highly recommend setting up POP accounts and maintaining your own backups because we DO NOT guarantee email backup as a service.  We back up every server, every night and that backup is kept for 12 days only.  It must be stressed that this is in no way a guarantee that your email is safely backed up.  BACKING UP YOUR EMAIL IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY.

POP vs IMAP – What’s the difference?

Using a POP account: Your email client (Like Outlook), would send and receive with our servers and download your emails. Once done, it then removes the email from our server. Your email is now stored on your own device, where it’s easy to manage.

Using an IMAP Account: Your email client (Like Outlook), would do a SYNC with our servers. It would bring a copy of all your email to your device as well as send any changes, such as sent items, new folders created etc, then send back up to our servers. A duplicate now exists on your email client and our server.

Although an IMAP account sounds great, there are serious disadvantages to using IMAP:

  1. The more emails get stored on the server, the slower your sync will become.
  2. If something goes wrong on our email server which may involve, say hardware replacement, your account on our server may be emptied out but because syncing works both ways, your email client will also be emptied out and you’ll lose all your email.
  3. Using more server storage space = higher charges.

We charge PER 1 GIG of space used on the server per month, so setting up your mail accounts as POP will cost you less than IMAP as it uses much less server space. (Clients with supporting services get a preferential rate)

Making backups of POP accounts are also really simple, which is why we recommend setting up your email accounts that way.

Email Account Setup:

ENSURE THAT ALL YOUR DEVICES ARE SET UP USING THE SAME FORMAT ie.  If your main device is set up as a POP then any other devices need to be set up as a POP also OR if your main device is set up as an IMAP then any other devices need to be set up as an IMAP also.  This way you avoid future Syncing errors and mailbox downtime or loss of mails.
