When might you use AI tools?

Should you? Can you? These are big questions, and it's ultimately up to you to carefully determine if AI use is appropriate and necessary for your given task.

Here are some examples of when AI tools might be helpful, and examples of when you might need to pause and reconsider using AI:

✅AI tools can be helpful with...

  • Writing models
  • Suggesting synonyms
  • Copy editing
  • Brainstorming
  • Summarizing -- but be aware of copyright or privacy restrictions of any content you upload
  • Basic translation

❌Be more cautious with AI tools if you...

  • Need very recent information
  • Do not have previous knowledge of a topic
  • Are concerned about potential plagiarism or copyright violations
  • Need to perform complex mathematics
  • Are unsure if you're permitted to use AI tools in your research or writing
  • Are concerned about the electrical energy use in running these tools

Reminder: Always check your syllabus or ask your professor before using AI tools for classwork
