Overview: Tardive dyskinesia (TD) is a movement disorder that can develop after taking certain psychiatric medications, often gradually and sometimes unnoticed at first. This session will help you recognize early signs, understand who is at risk, and feel confident advocating for evaluation and care. We’ll focus on what TD looks like in real life, how to talk to healthcare providers about concerns, and what steps can be taken if symptoms appear. No medical background required – just curiosity and a willingness to learn.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Recognize the signs of tardive dyskinesia (TD), including early and subtle symptoms
  2. Identify who is at risk and when to be concerned about abnormal involuntary movements
  3. Confidently advocate for evaluation by communicating concerns with healthcare providers

TD Awareness Week brings the mental health community together to recognize the physical, social and emotional impact of TD and reinforce the importance of routine screening for earlier diagnosis and treatment. This dedicated week educates people across the U.S. about TD and encourages people taking antipsychotic medication to talk to their healthcare provider about any abnormal, involuntary and repetitive movements they may be experiencing. Earlier recognition and treatment of TD can make a positive impact in the lives of people who are already managing their mental illness.

Tardive dyskinesia (TD) is an involuntary movement disorder linked to some antipsychotic
medications. Watch this video to learn why talking to your healthcare provider about
screening for uncontrolled movements matters.
