Pagosa Springs, Colorado, Colorado’s Best Kept Secret
Tucked into the southern San Juan Mountains at the headwaters of the San Juan River, Pagosa Springs sits at 7,100 feet and punches well above its weight for a town of 1,700 people. It has the deepest geothermal hot spring on Earth. It sits 23 miles from Wolf Creek, Colorado’s snowiest ski area. It’s surrounded by 2.5 million acres of national forest. And somehow, it still feels like a secret.
That’s the thing about Pagosa. It hasn’t been overrun. The main street still has locally owned shops. The trails aren’t crowded. The hot springs are actually affordable. And the people who live here tend to be quietly grateful that not everyone has figured it out yet.
If you’re searching for things to do in Pagosa Springs, the short answer is: a lot. The longer answer is below.
Things to Do in Pagosa Springs
Pagosa Springs is an outdoor town first and foremost. But there’s more here than just hiking boots and ski passes. Here’s a quick look at what’s waiting for you.
🌊 Hot Springs
The hot springs are the soul of this town. The Great Pagosa Aquifer, the world’s deepest geothermal hot spring, feeds multiple bathhouses along the San Juan River. Morning soak, evening soak, après-ski soak. There is no wrong time.
🥾 Hiking
From easy riverside walks to the demanding push up Pagosa Peak, the trails around here are the real deal. San Juan National Forest starts essentially at the edge of town. Bring layers, the weather changes fast above 10,000 feet.
⛷️ Wolf Creek Ski Area
Over 430 inches of annual snowfall. Short lift lines. No resort sprawl. Wolf Creek is 23 miles up the road and it’s the best argument for visiting Pagosa in winter. Locals love that it’s still a skier’s mountain.
🎣 Fishing
The San Juan River below Navajo Dam is one of the most renowned tailwater fisheries in the country. The Piedra River is a gem for those willing to hike in. Pagosa is serious fly fishing country.
👨👩👧 Kids & Families
Treasure Falls. The hot springs. Sledding. Dog sledding. Sleigh rides. Pagosa is genuinely great with kids, there’s always something to do that doesn’t require a high threshold for pain or altitude.
🗺️ Day Trips
Mesa Verde. Chimney Rock. Durango. Creede. Pagosa sits at the center of one of the richest corners of the American Southwest, there’s a remarkable day trip in every direction.
Pagosa Springs is a Year-Round Destination
One of the most common questions we get: when is the best time to visit Pagosa Springs? Honest answer, it depends on what you’re after. But the real answer is that every season has a compelling argument.
Summer
Warm days, cool nights, and wildflowers everywhere. Trails are in peak condition. The San Juan River is running. Highs in the mid-70s make Pagosa a natural escape from the heat of Albuquerque, Phoenix, and Dallas. Summer also fills the events calendar, Folk ‘N Bluegrass, Colorfest, the Pagosa Car Show.
Fall
Arguably the best-kept seasonal secret in Colorado. Aspens turn gold across the mountainsides, crowds thin out, and the air gets that crisp bite that makes hiking genuinely perfect. Colorfest weekend in September celebrates the season with food, art, and hot air balloons. Don’t sleep on fall in Pagosa.
Winter
Wolf Creek gets more snow than almost any resort in Colorado. Add snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, dog sledding, sleigh rides, and steaming hot springs pools on a cold night winter in Pagosa is a full itinerary. Winterfest and Skijoring bring the community together in ways that remind you why small mountain towns are special.
Spring
The shoulder season. Some trails are still muddy, but the rivers start running high, lodging rates drop, and the town takes a breath before summer hits. If you’ve wanted to see Pagosa without the crowds, spring is your window. The hot springs are open year-round, as always.
The Hot Springs — Why Pagosa Is Unlike Anywhere Else
The name “Pagosa” comes from the Southern Ute word Pagosah, meaning “healing waters.” The Ute people soaked in these springs for centuries, and the Great Pagosa Spring was considered neutral ground where even warring tribes would bathe in peace. That history matters. These aren’t manufactured resort pools; they’re the real thing.
Today, several bathhouses along the San Juan River tap into the same aquifer, The Springs Resort, Overlook Mineral Springs Spa, Healing Waters, and a handful of free public pools along the Riverwalk. Water temperatures vary by pool, mineral content is high, and the setting, a mountain river running through a small town, is genuinely beautiful.
If you only do one thing in Pagosa Springs, make it a soak. Morning or night, winter or summer — it’s always worth it.
What’s Happening in Pagosa Springs
Pagosa Springs has a surprisingly active events calendar for its size. Some of our favorites that keep the locals talking:
- Winterfest & Skijoring — horse-pulled skiers racing through obstacle courses downtown. It is exactly as chaotic and wonderful as it sounds.
- Loggerpalooza — chainsaw and axe competitions at Motel Soco. Legitimately impressive athletes, great community atmosphere.
- Colorfest — a fall festival timed with the aspen color peak. Hot air balloons, local food, art, and the kind of autumn scenery that makes you consider moving here permanently.
- Folk ‘N Bluegrass Festival — live music in a mountain setting. A summer staple.
- Four Corners Folk Festival — one of the region’s best music festivals, drawing national acts to a very small town.
