I have found K Cups to be incredibly powerful tools in ALL areas of my math program. The hands-on component and real life problem solving that has transpired have proved to be a game changer in making math relevant, engaging and real. Feel free to download and adapt all lessons, both as PDFs and SMART Notebook files. Please SHARE!
Lesson- “K Cup Challenge” PDF K Cup Math Challenges SMART Notebook Teacher Exchange Download
Idea– Students work against the clock to use K Cups to think “outside the box” to demonstrate their math understanding! A GREAT, fun, interactive way to review and reinforce math learning!
Stands
Data Management/Probability– theoretical and experimental probability, using percent to show probability
Measurement– non standard and standard units of measure, perimeter, area of triangle and quadrilateral, conversions between metric units
Number Sense/Numeration- multiples, factors, arrays, ratio, mixed numbers, improper fractions, fractions, decimals, percent,
Patterning/Algebra- decreasing and increasing patterns, write a pattern rule, follow a pattern rule, create a T Table to demonstrate patterns, two step rules
Geometry- reflections, rotations, translations, characteristics of polygons/quadrilaterals/triangles , symmetry, acute, obtuse and right angles,
Lesson- “K Cup Stack” PDF K Cup Stack SMART Notebook Teacher Exchange Download
Idea– Have students compete to stack K Cups in a single and double stack.
Stands
Data Management– tally charts, mean, median, mode, range, create a bar graph
Measurement– measuring using standard and non standard units of measure
Number Sense– fractions, decimals and percent
