CHARACTER NAME: Noah "Puck" Puckerman
FANDOM: Glee
CANON: 2.06 Never Been Kissed, right after Puck gets out of Juvie.
WHAT THEY LOST: His ability to play the guitar; while nothing as significant as, say, his memories of his family or his Mohawk, his guitar plays a pretty central role in his musical ability, and losing that may not destroy him completely but it will be a hit to his "rock star" mentality. It's one of the very few things he has over the other Gleeks (though he's loathe to be called such) and there are very few episodes of him where he doesn't play it at least once. Without it, all he can do is sing, and that's not very "cool" at all. For a high shool student, image is everything.

ABOUT THE CHARACTER:The first thing to know about Puck is that he's a badass. He's a kick ass and take no prisoners kind of guy with a one track mind focused on money, booze and women. At least, that's how he used to be. Puck is very much your typical high school delinquent: violent and brash and doesn't seem to care about anything, but it's all just him acting out. Before joining Glee club, everyone thought he was just a punk, a meathead jock that rules the school through intimidation. And in a lot of ways, he was, because that's the image he made for himself. Why?

Because if people fear him, they don't fuck with him. You don't win the respect of your peers through adoration and love; that's for pussies. And without a father figure, Puck has to be the end all, be all of men. But while projecting this bad boy air, he's really just horribly misunderstood, even by himself. He's quoted saying "I’ve tried to be a good guy, I go to school and I say 'be cool Puck, be nice' but by second period, I've got a fire extinguisher in my hand and I’m spraying some dweeb with it and I don’t know how I got there." Puck is struggling to find that happy place where he can be at home, both in the world and in himself.

And for awhile, it seemed like Glee club might be that place for him. Being one of the losers kind of brought him down to Earth and calmed his rougher, impulsive side. He's a little more understanding now, and his soft side shows every once in awhile, but those moments are few and far between. He's still a womanizer and offensive as all Hell, but it's not quite as intentional as it used to be. Mostly, Puck doesn't know a filter and just says whatever's on his mind. Blatant honesty, we'll call it, and he has no problem letting people know what he's thinking. Still, there's some improvement in his behavior and demeanor. He's even starting to learn from his past mistakes, as seen in the way he stops himself from cheating with another of Finn's girlfriends and doesn't sleep with Rachel. This doesn't happen until after the canon point I've chosen, but I think it's a decision he made far before then, because he's trying to fix his friendship with Finn.

The point I'm taking Puck from is him coming back from Juvie for trying to steal an ATM. Now, the producers confessed that they really only had Puck go to Juvie to give Quinn space enough to fall for this season's love interest, Sam, but that does absolutely nothing to help his characterization, so I've got my own sort of headcanon behind why he made this random turn for the worst. See, Puck has a really, really hard time connecting with people, and while he isn't exactly the same lone wolf asshole as he was in the first season, he's still kind of alienated from everyone else. I think Puck panicked when he realized how much he was falling in line with the rest of the Glee club and actually getting along with them. The one thing Puck wants more than anything is a place to belong, but the idea that he might have found that scares him shitless. He's always talking about how he can't be "tied down", and that's because he's afraid of being committed to something so wholly and completely.

All of this can somewhat be confirmed by the end of the episode, when Puck's probation officer threatens to take him back to Juvie for skipping out on his community service and Puck accuses both her, the principal of the school, and Schuester of "never trying to help him." This is his lack of being able to connect with people finally boiling over, and he storms out and plans on running away, only to be stopped by Artie. This scene reveals that Puck is really in a bad way, because he's nowhere near as strong as he likes to put himself out to be. Artie reaching out to him draws him back into that safety zone that is the Glee club, and he calms down again, but only after finding reassurance that this really is a place that he can belong.

As far as his religious beliefs go, Puck is Jewish, but he's not exactly a die-hard faithful. He believes in God and "J-Money", but is more in support of believing in your own way and not having to conform to someone else's beliefs for the sake of finding religion. He says he "thanks God every time he makes out with a new chick". So while he does have faith, it's not your typical sort and he won't go Bible thumping any time soon. Still, he's a prideful mother and likes to boast being Jewish just 'cause he's Puckzilla and that's how he rolls.

Last but not least, I kind of want to touch on Puck's relationship with the other people in the show. Ever since joining Glee club, his...well, not really friendship so much as allegiance with the football team has gone down to zilch. Whereas they used to drop nerds in the dumpster outside the school together, now they're always at each other's necks. Puck gets along with the majority of the Glee club (as much as he can, anyway) but there are a few people whose relationships with him are a bit more significant, so I'll go into detail on those.

Finn is still very much his best friend, even though at the point that I've taken him from they haven't made up yet. Puck's a very loyal person, despite the fact that he doesn't show it very often. He just has lapses in judgment very, very, very often. Finn's still important to him, and he really does want their dynamic duo back. His relationship with Rachel wavers on the border of friendly and hostile, but the romantic part of it is close to nearing nill. He's one of the few people that actually gets along with Rachel for the most part, even though he still thinks she's annoying. Santana has an ongoing, no-attachments affair going on with him, though Puck doesn't consider them a couple by any means.

The most significant of Puck's relationships is that between him and Quinn. They aren't dating and never really were, but the tie between them when he got her pregnant says a lot about his characterization. For one thing, as soon as he found out she was pregnant with his child, he immediately wanted to be a part of her life and take care of her. Like I said, he's loyal, and he's definitely a family man despite his "rock star" attitude. He really and truly wanted to be there for her and the child. At the end of the season, he told her that he did in fact love her, but especially after their child was born. Part of Puck will always love Quinn, but that ship has sailed and I don't think they'll ever get back together. Their relationship is simply significant because it showed the loving side of Puck, that he is looking for someone to care about so deeply that he'd do anything for them. It's just more proof that he's looking for home, and if Quinn hadn't been dating Finn when he got her pregnant, he would've done everything in his power to keep her with him.

As a side note: Puck apparently got a vasectomy over the summer between S1 and S2 to prevent that from happening again. It was only ever mentioned in passing once but hey, the more you know.

THIRD-PERSON WRITING SAMPLE: Puck knew the ride back to Lima would be a long one - not because of the distance between the town and Juvenile Hall, but because of the over-hanging sense of dread that was coming with him. 'Doing time changes a man,' he might tell people, or something thereabouts, but his time had been harder than he thought it would be and harder than he ever cared to admit. Sure, he boasted being a badass and compared to the punks back home? He totally was. But if you want to meet hard people, truly hard people?

Try one hour in that place. Half of McKinley wouldn't make it.

Yeah, doing time changes a man, and Puck certainly changed. The entire bus ride back was spent debating how the Hell he was gonna face everyone in the school, or even his own mother. She'd cry, no doubt about it, and that was what he was really afraid of.

FIRST-PERSON WRITING SAMPLE: Ladies, gentlemen. Welcome to Puckingham Palace. Hot chicks, feel free to leave your shoes, shirts and other articles of clothing at the door. Dudes, sorry. I know I'm pretty, but I don't swing that way.

I dunno what this place is, but it sure as Hell beats Juvie. This journal thing's kind of homo though, no offense to my boy Kurt.

Anyway, what's for grubs around here? I've been in the pen for way too long. Any pretty girls wanna treat Puckzilla to his first meal as a free man?

INTENT: To be honest, I was only looking for someone to app to Para (because let's be honest, this game looks awesome) and one of my friends suggested I try my hand at him. Now that I'm actually getting into his characterization, though, I really want to see what Puck without the Glee club is like. Being in the club has taught him a lot and calmed down how often he acts out, and though he'd never admit it, Glee is almost like a second home to him because he can relax just a little bit more there. I'm not sure how well he'll behave without that, and I'm curious what'll happen to this moral base he's trying to build without them.
