ktichen comforts [Apr. 1st, 2021|11:22 am]
jams
I did up my game since the pandemicon descended.

I'd already purchased a pressure cooker but got much more familiar with it.   I did some sous vide (eggs for ramen and steak for steak)  and was impressed.
Baked bread, made spice blends, ... we find our comforts where we do.

These cookies are totally worth the fuss.
https://www.seriouseats.com/recipes/2018/11/brown-butter-shortbread-cookie-recipe.html

On my way home from the egglady this morning there were 2 crows eating something off the road.
IT WAS A HEAD OF A SEAGULL, JUST ONLY THE GODDAM HEAD
man, I yelled out the window   IT'S A GODDAM HEAD, YOU IDIOTS
and that's saying something because I really love crows.

**no crows where i live.
stellar's jays and the little ones, northern flickers, ravens (who ran a pigeon into the side of our house and tore it to shreds a few weeks ago.
ravens can suckit), and yesterday, trumpeter swans, geese, ,,,no crows.   Down the road, down the hill, yes.  but not up here.

what happened to the rest of the seagull?

Today I might cut do the first lawn cut of the year.   The back looks ok (we had a really wet winter and our moss has prospered) but the front looks like it could use a spruce.   There's a bun living in the brambles out front and I really love that bun.   I call, "Who's the best bunny in the land??" late at night, headlamp on, and the bun comes to show me who indeed is the best bunny in all the land.

Another Day [Mar. 22nd, 2021|10:57 pm]
jams
I'm feeling hopeful despite who knows what's coming next.

I finished a baby blanket for Nato's coworker ...and now another one is expecting baby.
Stitches with no bitches, I am enjoying yarn and hooks and all that.

Tomorrow is my birthday and I came up with a plan.
I don't bake cakes.   Most of the time, I'm bored with cakes but I thought I should at least know how to make one.

I invested in cake tins and all kind of weird magickal doodads for baking.
I made a 3 layer lemon cake today, have made lemon curd, strawberry filling and a lemon buttercream.

Tomorrow I'll split the cakes and stack the 6 layers with fillings and attention.
I've read many many many recipes/blogs/youtoobs on cake decorating.

Once it's done, I will take some photos, cut it up and deliver to my friends.
I'm excited about it and I have no fucking clue what I'm doing.

GOOD TIMES.

Our side of the island is usually calm but storms, when they come, bring the drama.

We met 10 years ago and decided to choose each other.   It was the best decision I've ever made.

I moved the snowlady to the backyard and was concerned the deer would hate her but they do not.

I joined a fucking choir.  It's all by zoom now.   I love to sing and sing all the time but I'm not a singer.
We'll how this leaky boat floats.  Or sinks.

it's a very heavy wind and rainstorm and at 3:30am, i should be sleeping

goodnight to you in your pjs, in your warm skin

deer, garbage bins, bunny, risotto [Jan. 1st, 2021|01:38 am]

I had a deer called Dylan, (he was and is not MY deer, but the fucker hangs out like he's waiting for a show)

that's last summer

but I changed his name to David Cassidy bc he's really pretty but not very smart (no offence DavidCassidyinheaven) and he started showing up regularly after Roddy was euthanized by the COs.   David Cassidy is bringing his almost twin and Dcassidy still sits in exactly that spot on my back lawn but it's now a giant mudhole (not really) because we've had a fuckton of rain.   I bought some organic apples for all these people for Christmas.
Apples are bringing all the ungulates to the yard.

Late in the evening, 3 young females,  they look so little, come by and they are my favourites.
Since living here, it's mostly males that hang out and get friendly.    The girls are a treat to me.

check this sweetness out

these two were pals all through the early spring.  I don't see raccoons these days but I do have a bunny in the front yard who stops and looks at me when I say, "Who's the best bunny?'

anyway, I was feeling like fractured glass after the cat euthanize yesterday but woke up this morning and reminded myself that I volunteered to be there to support the cat and my friend and not to make it all about me/Soma/Roddy/my dad.   fuck this year.

I made mushroom risotto in the pressure cooker and some seared scallops for dinner and it was a great meal. I tried to hook into a quick zoom toast with friends in the city but it didn't work out and that was ok even though I was wearing a purple velvet dress with a Mr Blobby pin on it.   I'd hoped to show off.

Happy New Year, if you go in for that kind of thing.
May we at last be able to hug and speak moistly

[mood |chugging Baileys from the bottle]

I will give you a brief and whacky update.

a)  Mid-December last year I drove down to the boat iwth a friend and we walked on to our different destinations for the weekend.  I was going to my dads and when I finally got there (car, boat, bus, train, bus, dad) his fam mentioned that he'd been barfing a lot.
Fasfwd to February and sisterRuthy and I went over to take him to the doc at Vancouver Hosp where he learned he had terminal liver cancer.

We alternated back and forth to be there and the goddam covid hit.   I didn't go to Vancouver again until the 3rd week of April, not leaving my car from my house to their house.  I was there 10 days later where it looked to me that things had advanced, my sister brought her kids for a daytrip to "see" (say goodbye) to grandpa and Ruthy and I returned 2 days later and were with him through the long difficult night of his death.

I am not over it.
I have supported 4 people through their last days and hours and each are different.   This was harsh, friends.
He struggled, despite the haldol and morphine on deck.  We sat on either side trying to comfort and soothe.   His wife and my littlesisterClaire slept through, which is not a bad thing.

In July beloved Soma was not keeping food down and was pooping/peeing decidedly not in the litter box.  He was 18.5, the vet said there were more medications to try but if you saw him arch and retch ..I was not going to submit him to any more medical experiments and he was euthanized on the 10th, I stroking and speaking softly, I love you Soma, through a mask.

It has been a hard year but my boat is steady and safe.

I turned 60 in March.
I TURNED FUCKING 60 IN MARCH and in July my truest sisters threw a party in Ruthy's backyard and they gave me a kayak.
THEY GAVE ME A FUCKING KAYAK

that's me up there, playing the risky game of pulling my cell out of the waterproof compartment.

I haven't worked since we moved here, Nato's always been WFH, our bubble is tiny, my backyard hosts a parade of deer who eat every flower (and I love them) and the occasional bear who I love even more but I clap them away so they don't get too comfy around humans.

kitkat Malcolm is still the dearest baby and it's been not always excellent watching him adapt to being the only cat.   No longer the baby (12 year old baby) he's lost his buddy/victim so I have stepped it up in chase and spank and tried to keep him engaged and active.  He has taken to leash walks and we do that a couple times a day at least.   Just around the yard but I want to take him to the beach, or at least the bench that looks at the beach.
An encounter with a dog would be superduper not good so I'm not sure how/if I will work it out.

being a cat....so, so exhausting

How are you I said?
