Home, unpacked, and currently YouTubing the Grand Prix Finale. Yesterday was one thing after another. I was expecting some delays on the first train down to New York, what with all the snow, but it still was annoying to have planned on over an hour and a half in the train station and instead have barely thirty-five minutes, especially when the line for the bathroom was so long I didn't even try. To make the long journey even longer, there was a problem with the train's thermostat. Apparently it was freezing cold in one of the cars, but in mine the heat was on way too strong. Which felt nice when I first got on, but nine hours later felt like an oven. The second train was late too, and as a result boarding it was a rushed hassle, especially because everyone had to board at assigned places and get in their assigned seat. After that the first three hours were smooth, but then we got into Washington. There it was normal procedure for the engines to be switched and the train to shut off power for about half an hour. But this time they decided to attach two private cars to the end, and then they couldn't get power to them. What resulted was an hour of sitting there in the dark, my stomach cramping up as well, wondering if I really shouldn't just get off and metro down to my parents in King Street, before they finally thought to tell us what was going on. It still took another half an hour to get things sorted and out. To add insult to injury, we promptly got stuck behind a freight train five minutes after leaving. By my calculations when we arrived in Union Station, I should have been getting into Alexandria 10/15 minutes early. Instead I got in 45 minutes late! At least I never have to do that train ride again; we're driving up in early January to move me between apartments and yesterday I decided I was staying there afterwards. |
