Beating the Clock: Powering a Large-Scale AI Data Center in Record Time

Application:
Data Centers
Product Type:
MV Dry Substation Transformer
Total Units:
140
Total Power Supported (KVA):
150 MW
Production Lead Time:
8–16 weeks

Background: A Booming Industry with Rising Energy Demands

The rapid rise of generative artificial intelligence is driving unprecedented demand for AI-ready data centers. According to a recent McKinsey & Company report 1, AI workloads are expected to account for 70% of global data center capacity by 2030. The high-power demand required for these operations places increased pressure on transformer manufacturers to deliver more units on accelerated timelines, ensuring high-voltage power from the grid is stepped down to stable, usable levels.

This was exactly the situation, where a leading AI company was retrofitting an existing industrial facility to build out a ~750,000-square-foot data center with a planned 150 MW capacity. Designed to support massive AI workloads, the project required equally huge power infrastructure, and it needed to be operational in record time to meet competitive market pressures.

The Challenge: Tight Timelines, High Stakes

From project start to energization, the project team worked within an 8–16 week period — far less than the industry norm of 30–50 weeks for comparable infrastructure. Backed by more than 50 years of experience and domestic manufacturing capabilities, MGMT was tasked with custom engineering, manufacturing, delivering, and supporting the installation of transformers capable of handling significant electrical loads with absolute reliability. Achieving this required precise coordination across engineering, production, logistics, and onsite teams to ensure phased deliveries aligned perfectly with the build schedule. Missing even one deadline could have delayed the facility’s launch and threatened the client’s competitive position.

Houston’s Wortham Theater reopens its doors after Hurricane Harvey in record time.

Behind the scenes MGM Transformer Co. was working with major equipment suppliers to design and deliver transformers in record time for the theater to reopen.

When the Nationally acclaimed Wortham Theater in Houston TX was closed by severe damage caused by Hurricane Harvey, it took many companies working together to design and build the necessary equipment to repair the damage and rebuild new systems to integrate with the old. “One reason why our recovery has taken so long is because of the complexity of combining partial 30 year old equipment and partial new equipment. The design team had to really work hard to make those connections and to make that compatibility work,” said Sheila Turkiewicz, Senior Vice President the Theater District.

During Hurricane Harvey, Wortham Theater took on about 12 feet of water, which damaged the basement, tunnel access to underground garages, costume shops, storage areas, and opera and ballet rehearsal spaces.

Working with a major equipment manufacturer, MGM Transformers designed and manufactured 4 medium voltage substation style transformers and delivered them to the job site within 15 days.

“Getting the Wortham back up and running again after taking on twelve feet of water is a complex process, but contractors and the forensic engineering firm have worked tirelessly to safely dry out, assess and stabilize the building,” said Sheila.

The Results: On-Time Delivery, Enabling Large-Scale AI

The project was executed in two phases. Phase one delivered 80 medium-voltage substation dry-type transformers, with shipments beginning in just eight weeks and concluding by week 16. Phase two added another 60 transformers, which began shipping after eight weeks and continued to arrive on schedule. In total, nearly 50 truckloads — carrying 140 transformers made and shipped from Commerce, CA — reached the job site, supporting every installation milestone for the 150 MW facility.

The accelerated delivery enabled the AI data center to go live on schedule, supporting the client’s advanced AI deployment. Providing stable, usable power to the data center, MGMT’s transformers are ensuring the site runs at full capacity without affecting the reliability of power for the surrounding community.

MGM Transformers can supply both oil-filled and dry-type transformers for projects requiring both.

MGM Transformer Company is one of only two companies in North America that can supply both oil-filled and dry-type substation transformers.  Often, when a project calls for units of each type, that places MGM in a position of strength relative to those who specialize in one type.

A recent project on the  Minneapolis Green Line Metro Transit to connect the communities of Eden Prairie, Minnetonka, Hopkins, St. Louis Park and Minneapolis required just that – oil-filled transformers alongside dry-type – as they sought to replace existing oil-filled while expanding with dry-type substations. MGM recently delivered on each allowing them to place their first light rail transit tracks this month. Here are photos of each type of unit that were each designed, manufactured, and tested in our Commerce, California facility. Having everything completed in on location allowed the customer to perform Witness and Factory Acceptance Tests without traveling to / auditing multiple facilities.

If you see a spec-sheet that calls for both types of substations, please don’t hesitate. If you need any more information about our dry or oil-filled offerings, you can find everything you need at Dry Substation (VPI) Transformers or Liquid Filled Substation Transformers.

MGM Transformer Company is the largest transformer company in the western United States, offering a complete line of transformers (both dry type and liquid filled) with a product range is from 10kVA to greater than 10MVA. Please contact us at 323-726-0888 for more information.
