How does your headcanon for your favourite characters vary from story to story? If you multiship your character in some way, how does your headcanon change between ships?for
bsg_epicsI don't have many hard-and-fast head canons--that is, beliefs about characters that do not undergo change. Aside from what's established in canon (and just barely that), I play pretty fast and loose with back-story, likes and dislikes, political affiliations, etc. I've come to realize that the fandoms I get most invested in are those that I believe neglected their potential most. It's some strange combination of huge devotion/love on my part, mixed with a considerable amount of "YOU COME HERE AND TREAT THIS LIKE A JOKE? WE WERE ROOTING FOR YOU. WE WERE ALL ROOTING FOR YOU." When I look at the first story I wrote--about Kara and a botched abortion--which takes place on an established colony, with an orphaned Kacey, and no cylon threat--it's already clear what was driving me to write: an interest in family and personhood and body autonomy, which we get versions of in Canon, but generally not to my satisfaction.
That is to say, I frequently change important details about the characters in order to fit the themes that I am interested in addressing at a given time. Because we know that Kara came from a working class, military background, and is religious, I think that as far as the 12 Colonies is an analog for Earth, it is extremely likely that she would be anti-abortion. But to say what I needed to say about abortion in my fic, using my OTC, it was necessary that she found a reason to do it.
