The building
+ its tenants

history and heart

The Mercantile Building was built in 1904 when Cape Town was a bustling colonial outpost of around 180,000 inhabitants and an important trading node between the Far East, Africa and Europe.

Back then, when sailors still referred to Cape Town as the Tavern of the Oceans, The Mercantile Building served as a warehouse to the numerous merchant ships anchoring off the Old Pier on nearby Adderley.

Over the next 120 years Cape Town and South Africa would see momentous change in all aspects of life but the Mercantile Building remained a timeless constant in the city centre and the unique hand-operated lift which dates back to 1929 and still carries tenants between floors are testament to that.

Today, The Mercantile doesn`t house materials and goods like it did 120 years ago – it shelters and cares for something far more important. It cares for a community of people who cares for this land.

Come and visit us and let our trusted custodians, John and Valentino, welcome you.
