Each of the 6 institutions in the Midlands3Cities consortium places great importance on sharing their research expertise with the wider community. Here are just a selection of outreach events and activities taking place in the Midlands.
Birmingham
- The Staffordshire Hoard Gallery at Birmingham Museums and Art Galleries (2011-14) – the University of Birmingham has close links to this exciting public gallery
- Barber Institute Coin Study Room – houses an excellent collection of Roman, Byzantine and medieval coins and can be visited by appointment
Leicester
- MRC public lecture series – lectures on a range of medieval topics aimed at researchers and members of the public
- Annual Brixworth Lecture – public lecture series organised by The Friends of All Saints Church Brixworth in conjunction with the MRC, University of Leicester
- Richard III outreach and school resources – educational resources on the discovery of Richard III
- King Richard in Leicester project
- England in the time of King Richard III – free online course
Nottingham
- CSVA public engagement pages – the CSVA plays an active role in the community with projects such as Vikings for Schools and the annual Fell-Benedikz lecture
- Medieval Heresy and Dissent Research Network – new research network for the study of heresy and religious dissent in medieval Christendom
- IMR events – most of the IMR’s events are open to the public
- Institute for Name-Studies – events and resources for anyone interested in name studies, such as the The Key to English Place‑Names.
- Nottingham History Society ‘Volunteering in Schools’ project
Midlands Viking Symposium
Every year the universities of Birmingham, Nottingham and Leicester collaborate to organise the Midlands Viking Symposium on the last Saturday in April. This event is open to anyone with an interest in Vikings and the Viking Age.
This year’s symposium took place on 25 April 2015 at the University of Leicester. Details of the 2016 symposium will be posted here when available.
