About Medefer
Medefer began in 2013 when NHS consultants set out to remove avoidable waits from outpatient care. Today we use secure, digital‑first pathways to connect patients with UK‑registered consultants within days and, wherever possible, deliver tests and treatment close to home.
More than 160,000 patients have now chosen Medefer, and we continue to work hand‑in‑hand with the NHS, independent providers and community partners.
Our why
In 2013, a patient was referred to an NHS outpatient clinic after routine blood tests showed abnormal liver function. She had been waiting eleven weeks to be seen, anxious and fearing the worst.
When she walked into my consultation room, she was tearful and afraid. I had her results in front of me, and thankfully they showed nothing serious. It was a common condition that caused a minor liver test abnormality, something we could easily manage.
She left relieved and I left with a new sense of purpose. Why should anyone wait weeks, or even months, for answers and care that could be provided so much sooner?
That day, I decided things had to change.
At Medefer, our mission is simple: to help patients get better, faster. We now provide rapid access to specialist care, typically within just a few days, so you can get the answers, tests, and treatment you need quickly and as close to home as possible.

Medefer is an incredible place for specialist doctors in the UK to work. Our doctors help review referrals from GPs and guide patients through their care, all online. Our team includes NHS Consultants who work with Medefer to make healthcare better for everyone. We have over 100 NHS Consultants who work in many di!erent areas of medicine. Doctors at Medefer can choose how many cases they want to take on, so the job is flexible and fits their schedule. This way, they can help as much as they want and make an enormous difference in patient care!
