I have been a cyclist sinceI was 8 and bought my first bike, one with a banana seat. That lasted a few years. Bought my first 10 speed from Sears, bright yellow. Wiped out the first time I rode it - went over a railroad crossing, my light popped open and the batteries fell out. So I hit the brakes; they stopped a lot faster than the ones on the banana seat bike.
That 10 speed lasted for 4 years. I graduated from high school. Moved into the big city and decided I was going one cycle from Jasper to Banff for vacation. Bought a new Ralaigh Grand Prix, named Bea. Had Bea for 2 weeks when some kid ran into me on the bike path and bent her frame. I was devastated, but it turned out she still functioned. That cycling trip was one of my best vacations ever.
Four years later, I relocated and sold Bea. Came back and bought Bea the 2nd, another Raleigh Grand Prix. We put on a lot of miles. Last year, I got Fiona, a Norco Corsa II, butter yellow with bronze trim. A real tank (36 pounds worth of tank). Bea was relegated to a back up bike. Fiona was an okay ride, very pretty but very heavy, and only 8 gears, which left something lacking. Did not get a lot of riding done last year.
In early May, I went to move Fiona and her kickstand broke off. It was attached to the frame and provided a connection for a rear fender. We took her back to the store for review. The Norco rep agreed to replace Fiona-no questions asked, like for like- great customer service.
So that brings me to Penny, a butter yellow Norco Vermont with black trimmings. 24 gears, handlebar shifters, step through frame. Wonderful ride. I am sadly considering that, after close to 30 years, it may finally be time to retire Bea the 2nd. Hard to let go, but time for Penny and me to make some new memories
