Comparisons: The Chauffer [Jul. 23rd, 2007|06:01 pm]

[Current Music |The Chauffer]

Okay, to make up for not updating in a while, I've decided to do something new.

Here are two versions of the same song, "The Chauffer" which I've been listening to obsessively for a while now.

The first is this one, by Deftones.

Deftones - The Chauffer

This version of Chauffer is almost unsettling. The reason the song is eerie, I think, in because of its tempo. It feels like it ought to be faster, but is being pulled back at the same time. The phrasing of the lyrics is very odd and adds to the somewhat ominous mood of the song.

Sleepthief - The Chauffer (f. Kirsty Hawkshaw)

This was the first version of the song I heard, and I instantly fell in love with it. Talk about a 180 degree flip! Sleepthief's take on the song takes the creepiness of the Deftones version and turns into an ethereal electronica song with a whimsical beat. Kirsty Hawkshaw's voice is perfect for the new version because of how "angelic" it is. Fans of electronica similar to Delerium or Enigma will definitely enjoy this song.

I promise I'll try to update more often!! Maybe I'll have an icon batch for you next time? ^^ Just let me know!

I'm so sorry that I haven't been updating lately, guys. DD: I've just been so -- lazy -- lately. XD And I just found out that I have a life so I have not been in the house at all lately.

I promise, though, that I'll start updating soon. I might even change up the format of my updates so that I upload more songs with shorter explanations and all that.

Sorry for making you all wait so much!

[Current Music |Finger Eleven - Paralyzer]

Today will be an new song~!

Paraylzer - Finger Eleven

This just came out about a week or so ago, I think. It's one of the new songs from Finger Eleven's new album, "Them vs. Me vs. You."

I like Finger Eleven. I don't absolutely love them, but there are some single songs of theirs that I've enjoyed, and I do have all three current albums. They're pretty cool. ♥

Anyway, this song is just catchy. It has a really great beat and is a lot more pop-ish than their previous music, which is on the heavier alternative metal side of things. It's definitely a song that you can dance to, no matter how white you are.

It disappoints me at the same time, though, because the lyrics feel so shallow. It's all about being ignored by a girl at a nightclub. When you compare that to the deeper meanings of their other songs (i.e. inner torment, strength, weakness, etc.) it all feels so shallow and meaningless. While I'm looking forward to this new album, I really hope that they don't choose to continue with style over substance.

Next one due...whenever I start getting popular. D: I hate posting stuff and then not feeling like anyone's reading it.

Chemo Limo [Feb. 9th, 2007|07:59 pm]

[Current Music |Regina Spektor - Chemo Limo]

Yes, this is early, but I actually have a good reason for it! This is actually a project for my Philosophy class. I have to find a song that talks about death and analyze it. So it'll look a little bit different from my other entries. (Someone please comment. I really don't want to be doing this all for nothing. xD)

Regina Spektor - Chemo Limo

In this song, "Chemo Limo" by Regina Spektor, the singer writes about being a (what I assume to be single) mother of four, who is terminally ill with cancer. While Spektor herself is not in that position in real life, all of the different, conflicting emotions that this song portrays make you feel emotionally attached to the character as she goes through the various stages of death that were mentioned in Elsabeth Kubler-Ross' theory on those five stages of death and grief.

Essentially, the entire song takes place in a world of denial, which Spektor makes very clear in the opening line of the first couple of verses, "I had a dream." She goes on to describe that dream, in which several things happen that are both symbols of things in the real world and indications of the five stages she's going through, although the stages are scattered throughout the song and not in any particular order.

The first verse is slow and very reverent, the piano accompaniment to her voice classical and mournful. She mentions that she had a dream in which "Crispy crispy Benjamin Franklin came over and babysat all four of my kids." Obviously, she's talking about money, because, from what you gather in the rest of the song, she doesn't have a lot, and wants to make sure that her children will be okay once she's dead.

Then, she says "...in my dream, I told the doctor off. He said if you don't want to do it then you don't have to do it...the truth is you'll be okay, anyway." Right there is an example of two of the five major stages. The tone of the song is still the same that it was in the first verse, with the piano still repeating the same rhythm, but she is definitely portraying the first sign of anger. To imply that she told the doctor off is to say that she was sick and tired of these treatments that weren't helping her anymore, but she can't say it to his face, no matter how much she wants to. Again, it's an example of denial, because some part of her keeps thinking that the doctor will tell her that she'll be "okay anyway," even if she doesn't "do it," meaning the chemotherapy.

That theme continues in the next verse, where she says that Benjamin Franklin had a "talk with her boss" about insurance, but she couldn't hear what they were talking about. All she knew is that they came out and told her that she would be okay anyway.

At this point, the song makes a change that seems very awkward for something this heavy. The somber melody turns into a jaunty one, but the cheerfulness seems forced, as Spektor sings "No thank you, I don't have to deal with this shit, I can afford chemo like I can afford a limo and on any given day I'd rather ride a limosine." This is all about the anger stage. You have to listen closely and really think about the words in order to hear the sarcasm in that last part. We've already established that this character doesn't have a lot of money, and obviously can't afford a limo, which further adds to the point that she can't afford the chemotherapy. Naturally, she'd be angry and in denial about the whole thing, because she continues to talk about how she's not "gonna die like this" and how she'll "go out in style." But the entire process is making her exhausted, so we can assume that she'd really just rather die at home, with her kids, in a place where she'd be happy.

Now the mood of the song shifts again. It goes back to the music and theme of how it was before the jaunty melody, but her words and the feeling of them is different. This time, I feel like it's more about the depression and acceptance stages. She says that she woke up and knew that it was a dream immediately, calling the limosine company. However, I think that the limosine is just an allegory for death, seeing as how a limosine looks very similar to a hearse and instead of "driver" she says "doctor." At this point, I almost want to say that the song is about euthanasia, because of the line, "The doctor he asked which way we were headed. I said, Sir, let's just go west and he listened obediently." Going West could be a symbol for moving on. The sun sets in the west, which causes the end of the day, and a parallel could be drawn with death in that situation, where death is at the sunset.

The part of this song that is most emotionally moving is the part where she talks about her children. Each one is given a name and she breifly talks about what they're doing, which adds to the emotional weight of the piece. The line that really struck me was when she talked about her daughter Barbara. All she says is "Oh my god, Barbara...she looks just like my mom." Possibly, this indicates a troubled relationship that the character once had with her mother, which she regrets now that she's on her deathbed.

Again, the song goes into the forced cheer of the jaunty chorus, but this time, a couple of the words have been changed. It's almost impossible to hear it if you don't have the lyrics in front of you, but instead of saying "It's making me tired" she says "It's making me die," and instead of "I can afford chemo like I can afford a limo," she admits "I couldn't afford chemo like I couldn't afford a limo." This is the acceptance of her death, although it still carries some elements of anger.

The song loops around on itself at this point, and she sings the first verse and the verse about her children again. I believe that this is finally death. At this point, she is fading fast and her final thoughts are peaceful, about her children, ending with Barbara...who looked so much just like her mom...

"Chemo Limo" is a beautiful song, focusing on the five stages of death as seen through the eyes of an ailing mother. Regina's odd voice is, at times, almost at a dischord with the somber piano, but it only adds to the emotion of the lyrics, creating a powerful, emotional work of art.

Blue [Feb. 6th, 2007|09:48 am]

[Current Music |The Birthday Massacre - Blue]

Today's song is a few days late, but it doesn't really matter. XD

The Birthday Massacre - Blue

Today, we're going into more of a "hardcore" direction. This song is the heaviest of all the stuff I've uploaded so far. If you were to genre-fy it, you could say that it has both elements of new-wave goth rock and electronica. In short, it's "darkwave."

The Birthday Massacre is a female-fronted darkwave group from Canada. They have a small cult following, but haven't gained any immense popularity since their first album was released a couple years ago. Blue is from their latest release, "Violet." The album itself combines songs that are on the more metal side, like Blue and Lover's End, but also has quite a few cute, almost pop-y songs, which I think is great for showing the versatility of the band.

But anyway. One of the many things that I like about Blue as a song is that the heavy metal is so cleanly juxtaposed against the clinking of bells. It sounds like a dark twist on a familiar fairy tale. Along with that, Chibi's voice goes from sweet, clear and innocent in the main body of the song to a low, furious, almost growling whisper as she sings the chorus. Although there is not too much you can say about the clean simplicity of her voice, she's really one of the better female vocalists for this type of band out there.

Thy lyrics of the song are disjointed and perfect, you can't ever quite tell what it's about. To me, it seems to be a parallel of two people, who both see the color blue as meaning something completely different. One sees it as a symbol of innocence while the other sees it as dark, morbid and evil. I think their lyrics are typically well written, and are very poetic with hidden significance that you might not quite catch the first or second time through.

Lyrics
Video The video fits the song perfectly, I think. It's very dark, creepy, and goes along with that theme of twisted-fairy-tale I mentioned earlier.

Artist of the Month: February: World's End Girlfriend [Feb. 3rd, 2007|01:11 am]

[Current Music |World's End Girlfriend - Bring me shadow, put on my crown.]

This is also something I hope to make a regular feature. The self-explanatory "Artist of the Month" segment.

World's End Girlfriend

Not much is known about the man behind World's End Girlfriend. All we know is that he's Japanese, he's very private, he has a parody spin-off band called "World's End Boyfriend," and his music is pure genius. Wikipedia has only this to say about him:

World's End Girlfriend is the musical project of Katsuhiko Maeda. Placing the Japanese band's music into one well-defined genre is difficult, as it blends elements of electronica and post-rock to create a unique style. His latest release is The Lie Lay Land (2005).

Just about everywhere else, you'll find the message "This profile has been removed at the artist's discretion" or something along those lines. Personally, I find something endearing about this lack of information. It makes him as mysterious and eccentric and his music.

Before I get into the real meat of his songs, I'll just lay out some basics. Most of his songs are long, ranging from three to twenty-five minutes EACH. The average length is usually around eight minutes or so. I don't know, because I haven't tried calculating it all up. Like Wiki says, his style is abstract, mixing noise, post-rock, experimental rock and electronica to creating music that is, in any sense, haunting.

Every album has a unique story that you can't quite describe fully. Not because of odd lyrics or strange words, in fact, there are no lyrics. Instead, Maeda weaves sound clips (in both English and Japanese) flawlessly into the flow of the music. Occasionaly, he will hire japanese singers, but their voices are so close together with the music that you almost don't notice that they're singing. Often times, the story is hard to figure out, and you just get certain themes or feelings from an album. The one with the strongest message, I think, is his latest album, "The Lie Lay Land." When I listen to that CD, I feel like I'm listening to a children's fairytale where something has gone horribly, horribly wrong. It feels like an old, dusty, abandoned circus. He uses very few "real" instruments in this album, save for a piano and some strings, but everything feels so together and so fragile that you can't help but be enthralled by it all. On the other hand, the album "Farewell Kingdom" uses a full orchestra in several cases, and his reliance on synthesizers, while still obvious, is a little bit less. I haven't quite decided on a story for this one, but it feels like water to me, if that makes any sense. It's very cold at times, almost impersonal, but it definitely seems to revolve around a theme of water.

At first glance, his music may seem to be what most call "ambient," and that is true to some extent. Quite a few of his songs don't have a central melody. And if you asked me to hum the theme of a song from any one of the albums that I've listened to innumerable times, I probably wouldn't be able to recall more than one or two. But that's the beauty of it! You can listen to the songs over and over again, and you'll still be surprised by loud noises, static, fading, voices; and you'll hear things you maybe missed the first time. He does so many unique things with his music. In the beginning of a song called Daydream Loveletter, it sounds like he's taken the previous song and just pressed the fast-forward button on the walkman, skipping through the piece before Daydream Loveletter actually starts. The mixing is definitely the art of his music. I've never seen anyone produce such awkward songs as well as he does. If it's worth anything, WEG is the only band in my entire iTunes folder to whom I have awarded five stars on every song.

Where to Listen to it: This is excellent homework music. If you want to listen to something while you do homework, but don't wish to be distracted by singing, this is the band for you. It definitely isn't something that you can just listen to on the fly if it comes up on your iPod while you're shuffling it. In fact, if that happens to me, I skip the song no matter how much I love it. This is a band that needs you to be sitting down and not distracted a thousand other things. It's great music to play if you're trying to get to sleep, but don't pick any of the songs that suddenly gets very loud around the middle (because that happens a lot).

Please check them out! I have two of my favorites uploaded here for you guys to try out. The first is from "Farewell Kingdom" and the second is from "The Lie Lay Land."
