Dr. Marette received his PhD in Physiology from Université Laval’s and then completed three years of post-doctoral studies at the Hospital for Sick Children and the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto. He is a full professor in the Faculty of Medicine at Université Laval’s and a researcher at the Quebec Heart and Lung Institute and the Institute on Nutrition and Functional Foods. Dr. Marette holds a Research Chair on the pathogenesis of insulin resistance and cardiovascular disease.
Dr. Marette’s work focuses on the causes of obesity and cardiometabolic diseases, as well as the prevention and treatment of these pathologies. In particular, he studies the role of the gut microbiota and inflammation in the etiology and progression of diabetes, liver disease and cardiovascular disease, and develops therapeutic strategies derived from exploration of the microbiome. His work is funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, the FRQS and FRQNT, the NIH and the Weston Foundation.
Dr. Marette’s research has been published in over 300 articles, reviews and book chapters. He has received several honorary awards including the prestigious Charles Best Lectureship Award from the University of Toronto, an international award that recognizes his contribution to the advancement of diabetes research. He also received the 50th Anniversary Award from the Diabetes Quebec Foundation for his research and training of the next generation in Quebec. He is also the author of two books including a book for the general public entitled “La vérité sur le sucre” published by VLB and Dervy-Médicis.
