Mandina's Restaurant anchors itself on Canal Street as a spot where traditional Creole and Italian influences come together over hearty portions and familiar flavors. This full-service seafood and Creole-Italian hybrid restaurant draws a crowd looking for classic New Orleans comfort food with a straightforward, no-frills approach.

The dining room carries a casual, down-to-earth vibe that suits both family dinners and small groups, with a touch of local authenticity over tourist polish. While the space doesn’t aim for trendiness, it feels lived-in and welcoming—an environment where you settle in for generous plates rather than a sleek dining experience.

The menu offers a variety of options reflecting the city’s culinary crossroads: from veal parmesan paired with spaghetti to staples like crawfish étouffée and crab fingers in wine sauce. Fried seafood options, such as softshell crab almondine and fried oyster sandwiches, stand alongside more unexpected Southern specials like the French fry po-boy topped with brown gravy, speaking to the comfort food crowd. This is a place suited for those who appreciate classic New Orleans seafood and Creole fare alongside a few Italian-American staples.

Service here appears to vary by visit. Some locals and travelers find the staff accommodating and helpful—especially when guiding guests toward crowd-pleasers like the grilled shrimp over pasta Bordelaise—while others have noted moments where service feels a bit distant or rushed. Arriving with a good appetite and an open mindset for home-style food helps balance expectations.

Best visited during leisurely lunches or early dinners, Mandina’s tends to hum with a steady local clientele, including larger groups who appreciate its ability to serve diverse tastes without fuss. It works well for anyone craving filling, familiar dishes rooted in New Orleans tradition rather than pushing culinary boundaries.

Who will enjoy Mandina’s most? People after a straightforward, hearty meal with both seafood and classic Southern options will feel at home here. It appeals especially to those familiar with the city’s mix of Creole and Italian influences, or anyone seeking comfort food in a relaxed, unpretentious setting.

Atmosphere-wise, expect a place that feels like a longtime neighborhood staple where the emphasis is on the food itself. This isn’t a spot for elaborate presentation, but one where the kitchen consistently turns out filling plates that reflect the city’s culinary heritage.

I really wanted to love this place! I have been waiting years to eat here & finally made it happen on my most recent trip to New Orleans. While the food was just okay, their service left a lot to be desired. There was no greeting from our sever or mention of any specials. Everyone in our group of four commented that the server clearly didn’t want to be at work or waiting on our table. We asked the server to help us pick between two appetizers (crab fingers or shrimp remoulade). She recommend the most expensive appetizer which is a $30 sampler platter. This platter doesn’t include either appetizers we were interested in so this really made no sense & just felt like a poor attempt at upselling. The server kept disappearing for 15-20 minutes at a time which made it very hard to get refills or to pay our bill once it was time to leave. For all the great food options in New Orleans, I sadly won’t be returning here in the future. The prices are too high to receive subpar service.

What a great place. Fun atmosphere and excellent service. The waiter recommended this shrimp bordelaise pasta and it was fantastic.

Delicious shrimp creole, gumbo, fresh garden salad, great cocktail and tartar sauce, and blue cheese dressing. Great portion size for the appetizer sampler, we got oyster, shrimp and onion rings. Great service!

Mandina's is another long time culinary destination in New Orleans. Be careful when you order, as the portions are enormous! The calamari appetizer was delicious and enough for 4 people. So we knew to split the Veal Parmesan. The photo is only half a portion. They plate it for two, in the kitchen. It was scrumptious as always, over the years. And always a pleasing experience.

On a Friday night party of 6 a reservation is best. The food and service is excellent. The portions are large and only 2 of us finished our meals. The veal parm was very tender and very much enjoyed the stuffed shrimp. The open faced roast beef is excellent also. A definite must go when in NOLA!

Mandina’s will always be one of my favorite New Orleans restaurants! The gumbo tastes exactly the same as it did when I first started eating there back in 1995 — rich, flavorful, and full of memories. I also love their po’boys and daily specials. Great food, great people, and that timeless New Orleans charm that keeps me coming back!
