The Ethics of Diagnosing and the DSM With Keynote Speaker Dr. Lisa Cosgrove
Dr. Cosgrove will be presenting in the morning. Although all medical specialties have come under scrutiny for financial conflicts of interest, the field of psychiatry has been at the epicenter of this “crisis of credibility.” Cosgrove’s work addresses the problems and ethical dilemmas that arise in the mental health field (especially in psychiatry) when there are financial ties between the pharmaceutical industry and researchers or professional organizations. Her research teams have conducted studies examining the type and extent of financial associations between authors of psychiatric diagnostic and treatment guidelines and the pharmaceutical industry.
To expand the experience, there will be a panel discussion in the afternoon. Panel members will discuss diagnosing from multi-cultural, systemic, family and non-diagnostic perspectives.
