"File-sharers, beware: By July 12, major US Internet service providers (ISPs) will voluntarily begin serving as copyright police for the entertainment industry, according to Cary Sherman, chief executive of the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). The so-called “six-strikes” plan is said to be one of the most effective anti-piracy efforts ever established in the US."
The article goes on to give details. After six notices, internet providers will decide to throttle a person's internet speed, or cut it off altogether. I don't know if they will crack down on torrents only, or if it is up to the internet provider. I get the sense it is up to the internet provider. So some people could get away with downloading non torrents, while others might get their internet service cut off. I urge you to click it and read, as we all know people who download.
No more downloading eps of your favorite shows for vidding, gifs, or fanfiction art. No more downloading screencaps possibly. I'm so sorry my friends. I don't even know if BT Guard will work to protect you, but I would google it if I were you. It is a professional service that supposedly can protect you from the invasive eyes of your internet provider.
Just, my friends, please make each other aware. Please be aware of the date JULY 12TH. Mark your calendar and double check with your internet provider by then. If you start receiving notices of downloaded activity, this is why. And your internet service could be throttled or cut off.

It becomes a felony with a potential 5 year sentence to stream a copyrighted work that would cost more than $2,500 to license, even if you are a totally noncommercial user, e.g. singing a pop song on Facebook.
Chaos for the Internet
Thousands of sites that are legal under the DMCA would face new legal threats. People trying to keep the internet more secure wouldn't be able to rely on the integrity of the DNS system.
Get on the phone and call your representative. Express your disapproval. Tell him or her exactly how you feel, and that you don't support this. Tell your friends to call their representatives, their Congressperson, and complain. Mention that you are a registered voter that takes your civic responsibility seriously and that you will use that vote to express your feelings about this.
“We support the bill’s stated goals — providing additional enforcement tools to combat foreign ‘rogue’ websites that are dedicated to copyright infringement or counterfeiting,” the Internet companies wrote in Tuesday’s letter. “Unfortunately, the bills as drafted would expose law-abiding U.S. Internet and technology companies to new uncertain liabilities, private rights of action and technology mandates that would require monitoring of websites.” The chamber-led coalition in support of the bill includes Walmart, Eli Lilly & Co. and Netflix.
Google and other opponents of the legislation argue that restricting the Internet in the U.S. sets a bad international precedent and that the language defines infringing too broadly.
Okay, so I don't usually do this, but this is an issue near and dear to me and this is getting very little no attention in the mainstream media.
Mississippi is voting on November 8th on whether to pass Amendment 26, the "Personhood Amendment". This amendment would grant fertilized eggs and fetuses personhood status.
Putting aside the contentious issue of abortion, this would effectively outlaw birth control and criminalize women who have miscarriages. This is not a good thing.
Jackson Women's Health Organization is the only place women can get abortions in the entire state, and they are trying to launch a grassroots movement against this amendment. This doesn't just apply to Mississippi, though, as Personhood USA, the group that introduced this amendment, is trying to introduce identical amendments in all 50 states.
What's more, in Mississippi, this amendment is expected to pass. It even has Mississippi Democrats, including the Attorney General, Jim Hood, backing it.
The reason I'm posting this here is because I made a meager donation to the Jackson Women's Health Organization this morning, and I received a personal email back hours later - on a Sunday - thanking me and noting that I'm one of the first "outside" people to contribute.
So if you sometimes pass on political action because you figure that enough other people will do something to make a difference, make an exception on this one. My RSS reader is near silent on this amendment. I only found out about it through a feminist blog. The mainstream media is not reporting on it.
If there is ever a time to donate or send a letter in protest, this would be it.
What to do?

I added a little to the werewolf fic I'm working on for inception big bang because slavefic is way too long to happen, and opened the wips that I did for a charity thing that I can't remember anymore. I don't write for bandom anymore, and it's hard for me to get excited about MCR's new CD drop because of that interview of Gerard's.
Don't get me wrong; if someone else can still fan them and enjoy them, then that is fantastic for them. I don't begrudge anyone their fandom interests or their squee, but, for me personally, I was already pretty put off by some of their twitters and then ladyboy and that just... brought up shit for me. I'm been ruminating for a good long while about that and wasn't sure if I was going to say anything but what the hell.

Because no other meme on the history of tumblr has used a photo that might be a copyright violation. I do have to wonder why they chose that tumblr, though. Still not over the Rapunzel rename. Why can't princesses be kickass and have their own names in the marquee? Why is a nearly 300mil haul a bad thing to Disney? Why are we constantly told that movies-staring-minorities can't be enjoyed by the majority, e.g. Tangled. I loved the idea of making Rapunzel a lot less :( save me in her movie, but the fact that they've retooled the concept to make sure the male hero is Also Awesome And Maybe More So Than That Girl makes me think that this is a movie I am going to skip and watch when it comes out on Redbox.
And now I'm talking about the HPrpg game that I cannot run or think about running because those games are time suckers, but I want to write it out a little because I'm crazy.

Also, and this is horrible of me, but I just realized that DH made some of the hardest roles to fill post-HBP or in general (Tonks, Remus, Weasley Twins, Moody) easier to get people to sign up for. Everyone loves angst. ...:D?

I finished my first PhD application! All applications are about the same, so once you have one, the others are a lot easier. I'm submitting "Rumble of Passing Boxcars" and "Turning to Sea Foam." Technically Sea Foam is a prose poem, but I think it reads like a story so w/e w/e. If USC doesn't approve me for a fee waiver, I'm going to have to pretend it never happened. :( It's kind of crushing, tbh. But it's 85$ which is almost twice as much as the rest. Sadly it is also the best. :(

In other news, I'm going to see Deathly Hallows tonight! I am not excited at all :| I'm so tired and I don't want to go, but I'm like "I paid money to see this movie, so goddamnit! I'm going." I fell asleep watching CM last night, which is unheard of. I can't watch TV that I haven't seen before, particularly shows that I like, before bed because I won't go to bed. I'll watch them. But last night, I crawled into bed and BAM out like a light. It was pretty great.
How great is Priviledge Denying Dude? He's pretty great. It gets a little sticky sometimes because there are people who think that the site is super-serious, but for the most part \o/
