Organized by shareQ (www.shareq.org) with the support of the French Embassy, the First Conference for Low-Tech Leb was held at Beirut Digital District on the 5th of June, bringing together innovators, institutions, and universities.

The term “Low-Tech” refers to any innovation that meets a real human need while being easily accessible, affordable, inclusive, and sustainable in a context of resource scarcity. The event presented research findings on the state of Low-Tech in Lebanon, collaborations with French entities, and new inventions while fostering constructive dialogue between universities and institutions. The stimulating exchanges that took place promoted an alternative and sustainable approach to technology, with an emphasis on practical solutions that are accessible to all.

The highlight of the conference was the announcement of a partnership with the Low-Tech Lab in France and the establishment of the Low-Tech Leb, the local entity that will encompass low-tech initiatives in Lebanon. Low-Tech Leb promises to innovate and publish its innovations in an open-source format to ensure access to the general public, such as the innovations already published on its website “lowtechleb.org“.

Round-table discussions highlighted the socio-economic and environmental benefits of this approach. These findings paved the way for promising new ideas and collaborations, and for exploring practical solutions to promote Low Tech in their respective fields. The conference concluded with a fascinating exhibition showcasing a few Low-Tech innovations. Attendees were able to discover and interact with a variety of inspiring inventions, demonstrating the creative and local potential of this approach.
