Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost has been elected as the new pope at the age of 69 and will take the name Leo XIV. The announcement follows the traditional signal of white smoke rising from the Sistine Chapel, indicating the conclusion of the papal conclave. The conclave was held with 133 cardinal electors participating. Cardinal Prevost is an American from Chicago. The announcement was made from the Balcony of St.Peter's Basilica by Cardinal Dominique Mamberti. Thousands gathered in Rome to witness the historic moment, waving flags from various countries.
