Poverty has a way of making God seem not God, it has a way of making your Christian experience seem like a joke. One of the prayers you should always take seriously is asking God to eradicate poverty from your life. If you are financially comfortable, it motivates you not to compromise. If you are excessively poor, you will tell lies, steal, and compromise, not because you are bad, but because it is a side effect of being poor. So when God really wants to help you, He will not only help you walk righteously, He will give you all the auxiliary support systems that will help you. If I am not hungry, you will not tempt me with food. So when God really wants me to stay and not eat Pharaoh’s food, He has a way of providing for me in a way that makes me happy and comfortable. A God who lets you starve to death sounds like a wicked God, and so we need to redefine the God we have presented to the world. Our proposal was rejected because the Jesus we are selling to the nations is not complete. The first sign of God’s manifest presence is the ministry of healing, so it must not be silent. It must not be something that we are not sure will work or not. I hope you hate poverty because if you don’t hate it, you will stop God’s program in ways you cannot believe.
