Now in Days we have preachers saying that if you was a Christian and committed suicide you are going directly to heaven. This is not biblical no matter who says it . But in the beginning of Christianity that wasn’t the case . A person who committed suicide wasn’t said they went to heaven.
Augustine of Hippo (354-430 AD): “But as for those who die by their own hand, whether they escape other punishment or not, caution requires that they be deprived of the privilege of sepulture; just as, in the case of those who have been struck by lightning, the violence of the blow is held to consume even the right of burial. For these wretches are not to be honored with funeral rites, or to be admitted to interment in the sepulchres of their ancestors, nor to be mourned by their relatives, or even to be bewailed at all, their suffering being embittered by the infliction of this additional ignominy, while every precaution is also to be taken lest they be worshipped as gods, which tends to the ruin of the living, who foolishly imitate what they believe to be the example of the dead. We must sorrow for the unhappy, but not as though they were altogether to be lamented” (The City of God, Book 1, Chapter 17).
In this passage, Augustine argues that those who die by suicide should be denied the privilege of burial and mourned, as their actions have violated the sanctity of life.
Tertullian, De Anima (“On the Soul”), Chapter 25, Paragraph 6 “For nothing else than subverting God’s work is taught by that set of men—except perhaps the cutting of the throat, the separation of soul from body, that most acceptable murder, which they call liberation, and for which a martyr’s chaplet is awarded.”
Tertullian, De Fuga in Persecutione (“On Fleeing Persecution”), Chapter 2, Paragraph 3. “But say they, I prefer death to this abandonment (of faith), and to avoid their other torments, I will anticipate them by suicide. By all means, anticipate: but bear in mind that the thing that you are villains enough to take upon yourselves, you will give an account of before God—both as a violation of His law, and the crime of self-murder. For he who has frightened away an enemy with a weapon, is adjudged to have killed him; and much more does God reckon him a murderer who has scared the sword of the public magistrate from himself by dying upon it. In whatever way thou shalt slay thyself, thou wilt be his murderer. For though thou shouldest hang thyself, or kill thyself by a draught of poison, or throw thyself before a running carriage, thou wilt be none the less a self-murderer.”
The Bible is clear he who persevere to the end will be saved .
Matthew 24:13 But he who endures to the end shall be saved. And Revelation tells us that murders , cowards and unbelievers will not get to enjoy the New Heavens and New earth if they don't repent.
The Bible states A Coward , a Murder and unbeliever will not make it to heaven.
Revelation 21 : 8 But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.
And a person who commits suicide is all three .
1) He or she is a murder because they killed themselves
2) He or she is a coward because they quitted this life for fear of the trails of life .
3) He or she is a unbeliever because they didn't trust Christ to saved them from their situation.
We are told in scripture "do not murder" and the biggest murder one can do is that of murdering yourself.
Exodus 20:13 "You shall not murder
If pastors and ministers would preach more against suicide than defending those who committed it there would be less suicides. Oh that is not a message of consolation to those who lost someone because of suicide you might say. I rather be consoled with the truth of the word of God even if it hurts me and pierces my heart then to be consoled with a lie. In telling me that my loved one is in heaven when they really are in hell and the word of God is being twisted to prove a false ideology is not being a friend a matter of fact it’s being more of an enemy.
