I used to tie my identity to how much impact I was making. If things were growing, I felt confident and called. If things slowed down or failed, I questioned everything about myself. My sense of purpose rose and fell with results. What I did not realize at the time was this: I had confused productivity with intimacy. I thought being effective for God meant I was close to God. But striving slowly drained my joy and disconnected me from the very presence I was working for. Here is the truth that changed me. God’s presence is not earned through effort.
